Title: Diesel or Petrol?
Post by: rorajf on 30 March 2010, 23:00:43
Good evening guys, thanks for all the welcome's so far in the newbies section.
Time to post my request up in here now though..

So what would you go for?
I'm gonna hopefully sell my Astra and get an Omega off here fingers crossed, but need your advice on diesel or petrol?

What are the pro's and cons? I'm lucky that fuel economy isn't a big issue really, and would like to either stick in 3.0 cams if a 2.5 V6 petrol, or get my friend to re-map if a diesel. I also work at a car spares and accessory shop, with mechanics as friends for the big stuff....

I'm thinking £500-800 mark, allowing money to fix probs and modify on top of this..

Any suggestions or advice anyone?

Thanks in advance  ;)

Ror.

How long do you plan on keeping it, and how many miles a year do you do ??

If a decent length of time, and a reasonable annual mileage .. petrol V6 and convert to LPG ..:)

All the power and fun of the V6 but at less than the cost per mile of diesel.

Only downside is you lose, on a saloon, about 1/3rd of the boot space.

HTH  :)

Just my views .. nowt else .. :)

Ok, that's cool.. I do next to no miles at all really, work's van to commute back and forth five days a week. I just want something a bit beefier than my 1600 100bhp Astra, a bit of a Q car that doesn't attract too much attention from Mr. Plod.
I've had numerous Nova's, Astra's and Cavalier's, this Omega would be Vauxhall number ten, and I'd like it to be a bit of a grown-up wolf in sheep's clothing (with rear-drive!!). Couldn't believe how comparatively cheap insurance is for me at 29yrs old on a V6 etc.
Got a friend poss selling a 2.5 BMW V6, but it's auto, so I've heard you can't go crazy mapping, otherwise I might rip the box to shreds.
I had a 110bhp Passat Auto for a couple of years and loved it, lol..

By the way, how much would an LPG conversion cost roughly? I know a few local's have done it round my way..

personally I would go for a manual 3.0 ..  and if budget requires later LPG it..  repairs are simple compared to diesels..  :y

edit: I would first bring it to a good working order before LPG..

I've been looking on Autotrader in the evening's, but it seems there's a good market on here to buy from.. So you're a bit dubious about the diesels? Like I say, fuel economy isn't a big issue to a certain degree.. ::)

Scrap this plan, lol. Just spoke to the (ex) wife and she thinks now would be the best time before I settle into the new pad, so Astra's gonna get a valet-(ish!) and go on Autotrader, sooooooooo, should have money sooner rather than later, so keep me posted!! :D

Likely the Golden Nugget will be available as soon as my beloved MV6 is back on the road again.  Ideally before middle of next week, as I really don't want to have to insure it for a year ;D

Golden Nugget is in desperate need of a trip to WIM, and I need to check if I've warped the discs (::)) or the wishbone bushes have failed.  Certainly gained a bit of wheel wobble after a spirited drive around Snowdonia ::)

Ok mate, thanks for the reply.. Can you give a little bit more info on it at all? Photo's, mileage, T&T etc, history, as I could be very very interested..
Just got to clean the Astra up and then it's going straight on Autotrader for exactly what I paid for it originally, as I got it pretty darn cheap.
And to anyone else looking at this thread, first dibs!!! Lol.
I know things used to go pretty quick on my old Astra forum and wouldn't want to miss out..
This all seems especially tempting as you're a moderator on here, so you've instantly got a lot of credibilty, and you're not a million miles away..
Fingers crossed!!!!

Don't know huge amount about it - only had it 3 or 4 weeks, temporary car whilst my MV6 is being fixed. Bought from the For Sale section on this site, all I've done is replaced the knackered stat, changed the steering idler, and fitted a bluetooth handsfree kit.

I'll dig out original ad...

Just to clarify, as I've had 3 or 4 PMs from people interested, the Golden Nugget is currently not for sale due an engine issue.

Sorry to all those I may have disappointed  :'(, but obviously unprepared to sell a car that I'm not confident in myself.
