Here you go: Scantool.net http://www.scantool.net/scantool/downloads/diagnostic-software/

Jaime reported problems with the latest version IIRC. Will have a look at what version I was last using. A bit basic but free and reads codes, views live data reliably. Good place to start IMHO.

Aye, scantool.net

I had to drop back to a previous version with the chinese ELM based lead I'd borrowed.

As an aside, chrisgixer, do you still have my vagcom lead - sure you gave it back, which means I've put it somewhere very, very safe ;D

i've loaded the next latest version, 115 iirc selected com port 4 but not tried it yet.

vag cable was returned. Newent was it? left on passenger seat of silver bullet as requested by your good self. So i guess its in a safe place, same place as magnet on a stick perhaps?. ::) ;)

Seem to remember you said you needed it for father in laws car?

Baah, cant get this to work, it either freezes or says wrong com port, no com port seems agreeable, tried 4 first then 1 then all the others in turn, nout.

I asume it tells you when to plug in to the car or what ever? :-/

Currrently using v115    v120 wont load correctly all the others are forign languages :(

Have a look in  device manager to see what COM port is assigned to the cable's driver.

.. and I think it's powered from the OBDII socket so it needs to be plugged into the car for it to do much at all.

Can't recall what BAUD rate that cable defaults to. I think it's 9600 but worth trying the other options.

I had major problems getting an ELM327 to work ... 'twas always messing about with the com connection, and would NOT stay in memory, you had to do the whole set up every time.

That's why I bought the maxscan ..  :)

sounds like a case of plug it all in then open the application, fiddle with com ports...? ignition on?

tried all manor of combinations... led on the box comes on when plugged in to the car as well....

Plug all in, see what port has been given by windows to the usb-serial adapter (under usb in device mgr), and use that port. Ideally, in device mgr, force to com1, then reboot.

nope, no good, "support for this cable has been withdrawn for forign copies...too costly...visit scantool.net and buy a genuine one you tight git" or something like, keeps popping up.

it connected to read a certain ammount of live date but blatantly refused to read any codes, 0430 def present.....is 57 degrees intake temp. to high if the car ouside temp is reporting 16°? engine temp showed 87 ish and was still warm from drive home? fuel trims showing short term +10% long term almost +18%, iirc it was +1/2% at worst last i looked, pre cat O2 +O.8 both banks at worst at tick over.

cat code cleared with snap on reader available by coincidence from neighbour. Live date similar.

fink maf is on the way out perhaps? it has been suspected for some rough starts in hot weather as well.

Any thoughts?

Ta.

most usb/serial convertors default to com5 or com6 - and as this is a hardware default cannot be changed.

when interface connected check in device manager that vitual com port set up ok & note if com 5 or 6 or whatever.

Then when software loaded look at config/settings option & change com port to suit lead and save config.  Software normally defaults to com1.  Should now work ok on right com port.  Sometimes may have to manually edit config file (usually a text based file) if no option to change com port - look for a line which says COM=1 and change to correct port for usb lead.  :y

cheers dbug, it appears to work only when downloaded and run directly from the link, close the pc and it freezes next time its opened. Download again set comport to one and baud rate to 9600 and still no code read. Previous default com port was 7 if understand it correctly :-/
....will fiddle more next time i use it, seems overly fussy though tbh.

They can all be changed to any free com port ;). Reboot reqd, even though it appears to do on-the-fly

Well, it worked perfectly happily with no fuss every time I tried it. That was with Scantool.net 1.13 though. just checked the version.

Suppose I've better have a look for the CD that was bundled with it. I wonder if it contained a better serial driver for the USB-Serial bridge in the cable?

dont worry too much Kev, if it turns up then great, but its not overly important really, although kind of you as always, and more learning for me, so all good at the end of the day. :y

Remember there are plenty of other programs that will work with an ELM327 cable. Never got round to trying too many myself though.

Yes Kevin! I use Palmer Performance on my Elm 327 and it works great, but only connects on COM1.
