Is it because I am getting old, or is it really bad design by choice.
I have just done an oil change on my Omega and it really annoys me how difficult it is to get to the oil filter. Mum is on her way in her Omega and I have to do it all again in about half an hour.
Sorry guys just venting off.

Keeps your arm warm as the oil dribbles up your sleeve though. :y

You have to remember that all desigsn are a compromise.....and that the V6 pwoer plant has to fit in both longitudonal and transverse installs!
-
Shame they 'compromised' the loom route across the passenger bank ;D. That really is daft ;D

Yes Kevin, I def got that one. Just pleased the sun is shining and I had just taken my jacket off when I removed the filter.

Very sensible route when you consider volume assembly though

Very sensible route when you consider volume assembly though
Only it blocks access to service items - plugs.

Understood, but is it an easier on the FWD cars ? I no it will be at the front, but does the exhaust get in the way ?
Never had a FWD V6, thinking about it I would not one one ;D

Hardly, not on 2.5/3.0 anyway.
Coil pack based cars are worse.
So, where would you have routed it?

(smiles as he remembers the first time he changed the oil and got an armpit full......good times!)

Here we go again, mum just arrived with her Omega ;D

If I was an engine designer, I wouldn't be messing around with crappy Internet infrastructure servers ;D
Actually, for a production/built point of view, its not bad. Its post build servicing.
Would it be too hot to run under plenum, out of the way?

Hardly any room under plenum plus the loom would be fitted as the last item on the engine assembly

I was talking to a friend who's trying to repair a Granada Cosworth 24v the other day. Mechanically fine but they apparently ran a loom as thick as your arm down through the valley, down the transmission tunnel on top of the autobox.
Unfortunately they scrimped on the insulation, a coolant hose went, which necessitated access to the valley area, and as soon as the loom was disturbed the thing went haywire.
Turns out the whole lot had turned to powder. Moreover, the damage extended far enough down the tunnel that it was impossible to splice in a new section from above. The loom terminates in a ruddy great multiway connector that's on top of the gearbox, and not accessible with it in-situ, so it's an engine and gearbox out job. :o
That was probably very easy to manufacture too. At least the Omega's looms are out of harm's way and the connectors are accessible, on the whole.

Aye, compromises, compromises. Would increase size of package if it was run over top of plenum....

Hindsight is so good in foresight...............I'll bet this was debated to death in VX, and this was the cheapest way to do it............
-
could also be cynical....and suggest why make it too easy for diy.....get the repair / service market into the dealers :y
-
Yeah, good point!
Ford did that a few years ago with their "dealer service only" parts on the duratech V6.....took me about an hour to work out how to do it, as did many others!
-
The design approach will be totaly based around the factory assembly cost....with some thoguh put into servicing to keep fleet customers happy.....but not at the expense of assembly costs!

And in this case, overall package size? Is that why its 54 degrees?

Indeed, at £75 per hour!
These cars were designed heavily with the business fleet customers in mind, who would simply have the cars serviced by the main dealers without too much thought, and when about to start costing real replacement of parts money sold them on to joe public! :P :P :P
I know from when I signed the dealer invoices for my company to pay them, and when my still only 18 months old car, but with 110+k on the clock (in fact one got to 150K in that time) was changed to another brand new one!
Ah lovely days for me then, but now as a private owner I pay for those poor design flaws! :'( :'( :'(
..........and yes I agree the worst flaw on the V6 miggy is the non accessibility of the passenger bank plugs!! >:( >:( >:( The oil filter is the least of the flaws! :D :D
