Title: self levelling shocks for carlton diplomat?
Post by: jerry on 10 April 2010, 10:49:43
Hi guys,
further help needed for my mate with the carlton. Its a 2lt diplomat on a K plate and he needs a self-levelling shock for offside rear. He also needs replacement indicators for the front wings as someone has nicked one off it. He's asked about but with no joy and as you guys came up trumps for him with the indicator stalk he wondered if the OOF could help him out in this. If anyone has any ideas I'd be very gratefull.
                             many thanks, jerry :y

May need to go down the dealer route unfortunately.

PM andyc... He does a lot of older vx stuff and may have a 2nd hand source but will certainly be able to sort a good price for new from vx (if available) :y

From memory, they were not self leveling but more of an 'inflatable' setup with a schrader valve in the boot.

If it is the latter type then you need to be looking for Monroe items which may be easier to source in the US

They were indeed "pump up" via a shrader vave, but they had a inherrant leak problem, as they were supposed to be only 11 psi unloaded, 20psi fully loaded. Most people overinflated them, blowing the seals and rendering them kaput.
Try monroe load levellers instead of original, they do a cheap straight swap set, and they are soooo much better.

Mike.

cheers guys!!Having been misinformed about my mig having self levellers in the past its good to have confirmation on the carlton. I have tryed ebay etc with no joy so far and VX typically simply say its too old and they cant help. Will certainly look into the monroe option :y

Monroes on the back of my Carlton - fabulous things, especially with Spax springs. :y

thanks guys, I went onto the total carlton site and got a link to buycarparts so 2  KYB rear self adjusters (someone said the monroes were very good but for estates only?) on their way at a good price and good service. All he needs now are the side indicators!Anyhow, as usual, thanks to all for your help and prompt responses :y

Note: the KYB self levelers do NOT use the schrader valve setup  :y

hi mark,
yeh ,I realize that ,as both people on here and totalcarlton have pointed out; if you can manage to get hold of them the prices are astronomical so the best bet is to simply replace them with a different type. The beauty of owning an ageing car I guess :y
