Does anyone here own a motorhome? Not just like the gloryfied Peugeot Boxer etc, but a proper motorhome, like an allegro.
What are the restrictions for driving something of that size, as I guess it's bordering 7.5 tonne. Fully Laden maybe over, so a different test would have to be passed.
If anyone's got one - where do you keep your motorhome (other than at home) - are there suitable long-term parks, such as the ones you can put caravans on all year round?
Just curious...

I would not have thought you would need a different licence James as I have seen retired people, women etc driving them, also towing those Smart Cars.....
As for leaving them at a site that really disputes the reason of having one... you may as well have a caravan if you want to do that....
A motorhome would be brilliant for touring travelling around different places not stopping at a site for two weeks if you get my meaning :y

Due to your age, I suspect you can only drive up to 3 tonnes without further tests....?

My suspicion too..
I'm not in a (financial) position to get one yet, but we have talked about the idea...

Or just get Mrs JV6CDX to always drive it, whilst you sit in the back drinking vodka and whisky tea ;D

Found this...
'If you have a Category B license obtained prior to 1st Jan 1997 you can drive any rigid motor caravan without a trailer where the ‘maximum authorised mass’ does not exceed 7,500kg & with a trailer where the combined ‘maximum authorised mass’ does not exceed 8,500kg.
If you have a Category B license obtained after the 1st Jan 1997 you can drive any rigid motor caravan without a trailer where the ‘maximum authorised mass’ does not exceed 3,500kg & with a trailer where the combined ‘maximum authorised mass’ does not exceed 4,250kg, where the trailer does not exceed 750kg. For more information click on our useful links page to guide you to the DVLA website.'
Here http://www.castlemotorhomes.co.uk/onlineguide_m.htm.
However, I always wanted a motorhome until a mate pointed out that if you go to a site and want to go out for the day, you have to pack everything up and hope that your space is still there when you get back. 'Ah' said I, 'But I would tow a little car on the back, thus solving that problem.'
'Well then' said he, 'Why don't you tow a mobile roadblock instead and you will have the best of both worlds'!
I'm afraid I haven't found a good answer to this yet so I bought a mobile roadblock.

i looked into a mobilehome / camper for the Europe trip, bloody expensive things, £1,000 barley gets you 80's Transit with a bed in it!
Either get a caravan or go camping.... from recent experiance, i much prefer camping. Much more 'out doorsey' as per tesco ad ;D ::)

Any caravan owning Miggy owners out there fancy a rally. Thought Northamptonshire would be nice, perhaps around the Brackley area. I've heard that they really appreciate caravans in that part of the world.

We were in Dave Barrons (big caravan/motorhome dealer) on Saturday and they had a load of plug ugly Peugeot motorhomes. They started at around £45000! (new of course)

At least with caravans you get a decent drive around vehicle when you get there.
WOuld you rather drive a Transit or an Omega?
-
The wifes aunt and uncle have a big one (retired teachers with teachers pensions and no kids!)
Its bloody awful and what makes it worse is the fact hes a crap driver, you know, one of these people who trys to join a motorway at 30 mph and ends up sitting at the end of the slip road....
They have a small garage in the back of theres with a couple of mopeds in it and the odds and sods requried to use the dam thing.
The only plus point is the wind up factor......nothing better than knocking on the window and asking for two 99's....
If you have to get some thing like this then a caravan is a better bet.....although I suspect if you only use it a few times a year then a BandB would be much cheaper anyway.

The only people I know who get good use out of these are people who race. You can turn up at a race meeting with the race car on a trailer on the back, plug in the leccy hook-up and you don't have to worry about accommodation. Can't use a caravan in that case.
I must admit I'd struggle to justify one. All the expense of running another vehicle, about as much fun to drive as a visit to the dentist, a thirst for diesel that you wouldn't believe and you'd have to have spades of spare time to make it pay over and above the odd b&b or camp site.

Why?, I have not yet actually held anyone up for more than a few seconds (while overtaking on DCs and no more than a few slowies), on motorways and DCs there is another lane, if they are in a hurry I am no more of a problem than other people at the same speed, and the car is grunty enough to manage same road speeds as most other road users.
We don't all use Rover Diseasels ;D
