Hi, does anyone tow a caravan with a 2.2 auto? If so how does it perform?
I owned a new-ish 2.2 manual some years back and it towed really well. I'm gonna pick up my new pikey wagon next weekend and was wondering what to expect from the auto.
:y

resident burger van owner AA has one, and he tows with a 2.2, you won't win any races, but will tow without issues!
-
Cheers
I guess I'll find out soon enough, I'm picking the new van up in Hull and bringing it back to near Liverpool via the M62 so will prove a good test. I don't really think there will be an issue but more used to towing recently with a 3.5 Honda Legend: 208 hp down to 144 hp ::)

just been off and towed with mine for the first time and after having towed with cavs,vectras,v6 omega, disco i found it pulled very well and going averaged 25 and coming back 22 mpg..after sitting in middle lane for about 5 miles behind a truck that couldnt pass another truck i said break this put mi foot down andpassed him easily in the fast lane( ::)

If you go along the M62 from red to white rose country, HGVs use lanes 1, 2 & 3 of the up hill 4 lane section!!! Half a mph between the lot of 'em! >:( >:( >:(

Why do they bother? Mile after mile crawl by each other doing 0.0001mph faster, turns motorway into a single carriageway >:(

Because that 0.5mph faster makes a difference when you are doing 400 miles ;). Oh, and there is probably tolerance differences in the speed limiters ;)
Its pikeys and Miss Daisys on the motorways/dual carriageways that get my goat up, particularly the middle lane hoggers. And then the bmw drivers in their dedicated lane.

I liked Spains setup and what is common in Europe, no trucks can over-take during rush hour!

What weight's your caravan, I'm suprised at those figures. ::)
Mick ;)

I get better from my 3.0 auto estate :-?
Towing?
My 3.0 usually tows at around 20mpg with the caravan on - Luna Delta520/2 (can't remember kerb weight :-/ ;))
-
how come Mr Imber gets 15mpg when towing? ;D
-
when i had my v6 i used to get 30 to gallon towing on average as most of it is motorway or a1 where i come from but once i got rollin it used to say 35mpg most of the time and my right foot is a tad heavy ::)
-
My 3.0 does 19-20mpg towing.
I've seen windy conditions push this down to 15mpg.
My 2.5 was around the same mpg as well.
-
Just done a run down to Devon and Back ( Wolves to Newton Abbot) and included a few days out.
Total 548 miles
And using a 2.2 Dti Estate towing my wobble box on the back approx 1250kg.
3 Adults and 2 Children in the car as well.
Average Speed :- 46.3 Mph
And then here's the shock :- 29.8 MPG

My 2.2 only does that local journeys, no towing :o
I daren't put a caravan on the back ;D or I'd need a tanker (petrol) on the back as well. :y

how come Mr Imber gets 15mpg when towing? ;D
Because running on LPG I do not slow for hills.
And I keep to road limits not towing limits :-[ :-[ :-[ :-[.
And LPG is less MPG but also less £ per mile
-
With the 2.0 using decent petrol BP or Shell I could average 20mpg easily on the Somerset levels, hills were hard work though

Did you have to take the mother-in-law ::)
My 3.0 give's me about 27 mpg towing and i found the same as you when i was using my DTI that it found it hard to get above 30mpg and with using the V6 hills, what hills ;)

you're trying to say you keep to 70mph on a m/way? I don't believe you ;D ;D ;D

What speed rating tyres have you got on your van?

82.5mph ones - 130km/h

Our former 2.0 Auto returned 22mpg towing the caravan - quite realistic, I felt. :y
As already said, it wouldn't win any races, but no issues with it towing either. ;)
-
i prefer chucking a tent in the back and doing 80mph and getting 34mpg on petrol, or equivalent 50mpg on gas 8-)
Damn Caravans should be slapped with a green tax like 4x4's!

Nothing quite like a tent when the wind gets up and it's raining cats and dogs, trying to sleep and keep warm.
Can't beat it :D
