I know nowt about them, other than my mate has an 04 plate 3.2 V6 Vectra C turbodiesel, and the acceleration makes my 24V Carlton seem very tame, even in 6th gear, it pulls like a train at almost any speed.
And quick? bloody hell it's quick! When the Carlton hits the streets in May, we're off for some races tests at Elvington.
So what's all this CDTi, TDi etc all mean?
-
TDI - Turbo Diesel Injection
CDTI - CommonRail Diesel Turbo Injection
Think the V6 CDTI in the VeccyC is a 3.0 Isuzu lump, not a 3.2

Might be right there, but whatever is in it, it's like greased weasel sh1t when you floor the loud pedal. Saying that, it ain't loud like older diesels! :o
Which is better then - TDi, Dti, or CDTi or just turbo diesel? :-?
-
They are all marketing names for engines. For eg, Ford call their current generation of diesels TDCi.
Any modern diesel should perform very well, can be a bit peaky though.
-
lots of the modern engines have the 'common' rail injection with loads of turbo pressure, unlike older diesels

Are you saying that Vx were so incapable of design that they nicked more than one vehicle from someone else and marketed it as their own (after f**king it up by ripping half the standard kit out)?
-
The Vectra C V6 diesel engine is a 3.0 V6 CDTI with the displacement of 2958cc.
Buy a manual and you'll be fine, buy an auto with that engine and you'll be having problems left right and centre...avoid the auto's at all costs.
-
The 3.0 CDTi is indeed an Isuzu engine......but not nearly as tuneable as the 1.9 CDTi.....much to many Vectra owners annoyance

From what this Vectra can do, does it need tuning?
Mind you, I've not 'experienced' a 1.9. Can they be tuned to be more powerful than the 3.0 litre?
Being completely honest, it really, really surprised me - I thought disiesels were for tractors and odd people!
This thing would go from 45 - 130 in a matter of a handful of seconds, using fifth and sixth gears only - at least, it seemed like it.
I can fully understand the potential problems with it being coupled to an auto box, same as the BMW disiesel-powered Omega?

Most Vectra C's have a large range of auto box problems, not just the diesels either. I can't remember exactly but, it's something to do with oil or water ingression into the box itself, knackering it and costing roughly over a grand to put right.
As to the 1.9's and 3.0, the higher powered 1.9 CDTi has 150 BHP, the 3.0 CDTi has I think 174 BHP and as Mark said, the 1.9 is much more tuneable than the 3.0, good amounts of HP gain from the 1.9 tuning, making it quicker than the 3.0 in some cases. The 1.9 150 has a top speed nudging 140 mph in standard form.

Good God, the world has gone mad!
Even I might go over to the 'Odd Side' for the next motor then.......... doubt it'll be from Russelheim though, probably the Midlands.

The 1.9 cdti is a fiat engine and it's the same engine found in the saab range aswell as i have a 93 vector sport 1.9 TID 150bhp and it flys and with the little box you can buy from e-bay for about £75 you can get the bhp you to about 190 ;D ;D

Jeez - that'll do for me! What sort of MPG are you getting with that?

Yes, not much harder to get over 200bhp either!
Beware though, those little boxes are pretty shite, all they do is report an artificialy low rail pressure to the ecu so it runs a longer duration injection pulse.
A proper ecu re-map is much better and can also be used to disable the EGR and only run the increased output when the sport button is pressed.
My Bus (which has the 1.9 CDTi 16V 150bhp lump) gets 54mpg on my commute and the long term (14K+ miles) average is sat at 49 mpg.

you're right, diesels are for odd people and tractors.
someone once quoted listening to a diesel engine as being akin to hearing "a skeleton masturbating in a filing cabinet"
still, they are much more efficient than perol engines, and with modern electronics, the negative effects can be managed quite well. A diesel has won LeMans after all.
currently doing a 1200HP to 1500HP project at work for one of our vehicles. 28litre non-silenced V12 diesel

hmm v12 is only 2 straight sixes!!! so one would make 600bhp? :y ok send me the details for it!!!! ;D

Hmm just realised who you are after reading that!!!
nice one Stu!!!!! :y
-
I thought it was Stu too.....gets about, doesn't he!
Looks like diesels are the way forward then, as said, more fuel efficient than petrols, they're now quieter and more refined.
Up till a little while ago, I would never have thought of buying a diesel, but it's a serious contender for my next car now.
-
IFIRC.....Fiat have RACED their 1.9 at 220 bhp in quite a few races successfully, in rallies, reliability was excellant, taking 2,3, and 6th places!! in the "autocorsa" series!!
Oilburners.........not too shabby, I think.

I buy cars according to if the police buy them. If the police have them, then I'd buy it.
For example how many Honda Accords, or Toyota Avensis' do you see as police vehicles? There are some...but not widely used by forces.
And again, do they use petrol or diesel?
The Metropolitan Police use 1.7 CDTI Astra's, 3.0 V6 CDTI Vectra's, 530d's and 330d's and a few other. The majority of their fleet is diesel, TVP in the last of their Vectra's had the 3.0 V6 CDTI instead of the 2.8 V6 turbo.
The Volvo V70 T5 is still a favourite amoungst the majority of forces, but from as early as 2006 some forces used the D5 variant. Which is the 2.4 diesel producing 185 bhp.
It may seem odd that I'd only consider something used by the police (I don't neceaasirly mean it must be ex police, only that it's the same model), but think about how much testing and consideration is put to which vehicles are used for the fleet, their practicality, runnning costs, performance, capacity to fufill either IRV or RPU, ARV etc roles, occupancy protection in a crash, cost of repair.
This is why I would never buy a Vectra 3.0 V6 CDTI with an auto box, I have seen far too many come from the Met as non runners with gearbox issues, I've never seen so many of the same vehicle come through as non runners. But the manuals seem fine, so it's not an engine issue...just a gearbox issue. Some came through on about 65k miles, some 100k or more miles so I think it's just pot luck how long the gearbox holds out for.

Josh, see by your avatar your oxford based, as i was for a good number of years and was actually at WOMA for a few years , think i must know you if you are a trader? I bought a lot of ex police cars from there, but only TVP as they are the best looked after!! and the foreman at TVP service yard is a mate of mine so i got tipped the wink as to which were best and which to avoid!!!! lol :y

Indeed I am Oxford based, in Kidlington.
And I'm a trader, and WOMA is one of my haunts, beats BCA hands down actually. Went to BCA Bedford yesterday and the prices were totally crazy. I was after a Freelander 2 TD4. Trade price is about £13k, and one went for £15,200.
I doubt you'd know me, haven't been at it that long, almost a year now...but it's always good to talk to a fellow trader :y
And you're certainly right about TVP, they're pretty good actually...althogh there have been very very few TVP stuff coming through WOMA recently. I also find some of the Met stuff to be good. The other forces cars can be a bit ropey.

BCA Enfield was the same, 520d's going for about 12k, no money to be made. Only thing I've got relatively cheap there was the SAAB.
