How reliable?
-
A lot more relaible than the petrol versions :)
had a 420sdi not so long ago and averaged 55mpg on a run

reliable unit, bit behind times now (similar technology to omega 2.5td), one of the glowplugs is a bitch to get at though.
Like all diesels, lack of servicing could be an issue.
Had a couple of 420SLDis around mid/late 90s, can return easy 50+ mpg, and went well for its day. Not up to modern vx 1.9cdti, but easier to drive as less peaky

Mine's been brilliant. I change the oil every couple of months (Vauxhall 10/40 semi) and i've recently done the cam belt, injector pump belt and replaced 3 of the 4 glow plugs. Its never let us down in the 4 years we've owned it. To make it a bit quicker I've de-catted it, upped the boost a tad and its been chipped so its quite quick. I'm still on the look out for some 218sd injectors and once those are fitted similiar rovers have got nearly 150bhp :)
