Title: Police Omega dash - 7'' LCD display
Post by: joshwyatt on 06 May 2010, 16:14:47
I didn't really think this should go in the electrical section as it's more a general enquiry...sort of  :D

The picture below is of a Thames Valley Police Facelift Vauxhall Omega dash.

Above where the ashtray goes you can see a green and red thing. That's the police radio, a Cleartone CM7000. It's single din sized. And above that is the 7'' LCD monitor for the Provida 2000 system.

I'm looking for a 7'' LCD display as similair as possible to the Petards one shown in the picture for a police Omega.
I could buy new from Petards, but the cost for a full Provida system is very expensive.

I know quite a few members are electrical whizz's, who know all about this kind of thing. Has anyone seen anything similiar out there?
Ebay only has widescreen TV monitor kind of things that aren't quite right.

So what you going to use to drive that monitor Josh? I know one good way, without spending big bucks on PC install is find an old laptop, and shove it under the passenger seat....

It's VGA and has a composite (S-Video) input so for cheapness a simple dash mounted camera on composite ;)

I'm not too sure Tunnie, it sounds like Lee knows what I should do, but I've no idea what VGA and the other terms mean. I'm not a technophobe...just never heard of that.
This is the proper provida system...just click in car system and you can select the options you want.

http://store.petards.com/products.php?category=5217

I'll need a forward facing camera...but don't need storage capactiy on a hard drive.
All it needs to be able to do is have whatever the camera sees, come up on the screen.

Live feed is as I've described above, easy to set up ;)

EDIT: Have you got a pic of the camera? I'll see if I can find one similar :y

EDIT2: Looking like it was a bullet cam, can get one with all necessary cable for about £23.00 ;)

I have pulled a few trailers with cameras fitted, simple set up, screen displays whatever the camera sees, no recording.

When I was on continentals I mostly drove a LHD Scania follwed by a LHD FH16 so I had a wireless cam bolted to a bulldog clip and the receiver/screen in the cab. Used to clip it to the front corner of the (UK) drivers side of the trailer as that was my blind side in the left hooker. Worked great ;)

That's great Lee, a bullet cam is exactly what I'd want...and for £23 that seems a bargain  :y

There are plenty of 7" monitors out there for next to sod all money wise.
Granted most are "cheap chinese crap", but they have all the inputs you need and do the job very well for the money you pay.

One question I have is, if the screen is in position how do you use the heater control panel ;)

That's a very good point Jim, but if TVP did it, I'll have to do the same  ;D
It's not ideal, but I'm going to make it as authentic as possible. But, I may use some creative licence and see if I can position it in a slightly better place.

In this case KW...whichever is the cheapest wins. I am struggling in finding one's that look similair to the one posted by Welung666. I can only find it in the USA. Anything that looks similair to that, or the one in the original police Omega will be ideal. I'm looking on ebay as I presumed that would be the most likely place but don't appear to be having much luck so far.

You push the button on the head unit that instructs the screen to retract.

That's a good question, my budget for the screen would ideally be around £100 or less. The total cost of the whole project is likely going to be around £1800. So any savings on small things like the screen will all help out.

What do you mean by "it's not practical"?
If you can afford to take your eyes off the road for the time it takes to change radio stations, jump a track on the CD (or even change the CD), then pushing a button to momentarily retract the screen is no different.

Plenty of them on fleabay Josh, and invariably they offer more inputs than the all in one's.

Those are all 16:9 widescreen, Josh is after the non-widescreen variety I think.

i have a sneaking feeling i have seen that screen somehwhere before! i am upgrading to touch screen anpr soon, so this one will be vailable mate.
(ps it is def the same one)

p.s,  i sold my vascar and provida camera to alan for his covert vectra, but built my own replica provida camera for little money.  when you are next down, i will make one for you chap.
the size of the housing is near identicle, and no one is going to notice if you have a £50 camera, or a £500 camera, long as they look about right.
