Mate at work has BMW 330Ci, it uses fair bit of oil, but he's running 0/30 in it at the moment, but i think thats a tad thin, no wonder it uses lot of oil.
Since 10/40 Semi goes in GM V6, would it be ok in 3.0 Straight6? After all i used it in the Senator :-/

What do BMW recommend?
10/30 semi is what Vx recommend for their S6, but Beemers could be different.
-
bmw recomend 5w30 synthetic as an alternative
-
It goes around my Honda engine at 13,000rpm without any problems so I think it would be fine in a S6 Beemer :-/ :)
I believe TB uses it in his petrol/diesel car engines/bike engine/lawnmower/cooking chips etc. seems to be a good general purpose oil.
-
thats what i thought, in this country what with its non-extreme weather 10/40 would be fine, think BMW say 5/30 but its expensive stuff!
-
Some of those beemer engines do need fully synth (not just for longer service intervals), and some do use a lot of oil.
My brother's old 3 series Alpina used something like a litre every 1k or so (and needed 98 octane fuel ;D), so oil never really stayed in longer than 5k anyway.
-
Actually, my brothers one was probably the same engine as the 330, only better tuned....
-
semi 10w40 must be ok..
I dont think m3 owners always use expensive 10w60 ..
-
If it's using oil I wouldn't expect a change from 0w30 to 10w40 to make that much difference, TBH. There isn't a huge difference in viscosity once the oil is up to temperature.
I'd be checking the breathers are clear as a first step. :y

I take it, it's an E46? If it is, they use quite a lot of oil anyway, especially the 330's.
-
yeah heard they guzzle oil, his uses over 1L in 700 miles :o
Went for a spin, its a quick car but that ride is very hard :(
