Title: Well guys I've turned to the dark side
Post by: johnnycboy on 21 May 2010, 19:46:05
Picked up the BM yesterday and must say I've been impressed so far ;).  Still no where near as much grunt or fun as the 3.2 ;D  but fuel consumption is double.

It was a hard decision but needed a car which was a bit younger and if VX still made the Omega I ould have bought one but there you go, things have to move on. :'(

So please be gentle with me as I get easily upset if I'm attacked ;D

Gun loaded now fire away ::)

My missus is 40 next year and has got her heart set on a 3 series for her birthday. I think they look good and, surprisingly, are quite cheap at three yearsold.

I must admit even from the stealers, it was not as expensive as I thought it would be ;)

My misses is happy with it and it's growing on me.  :y

AND is has a 2 litre engine, well - 1998 or whatever.

The 316/318/320 are all the same size engine, just have different power outputs - so you call tell people that you have a 2 litre  :y

Surprising I know, but check the handbook, the 3XX is just a marketing designation

Not quite, this is how the 3 engines are:

525d - 204 BHP Small-ish Turbo
530d - 242 BHP Large Turbo
535d - 286 BHP Small Turbo & Large Turbo.

 :y

How is the power output achieved then :question if they are all the same size lump :-/

Different sized Turbo's on the diesels, different engine mapping on the petrols, some I think IIRC have different manifolds, like your 318i will have I think 143 BHP, but the 320i I think has a different manifold and a couple of other little mods and it has 170 bhp  :y

My 5 series has a 218 BHP 2.5 engine, the 523i has the same engine but 192 BHP due to a different manifold. But again the 525i after 2007 was changed to a more fficient 3.0 engine but still retains exactly the same power output, where as the 530i after 2007 has 272 BHP with the same engine. You could probably get you petrol mapped in a slightly different way and it'd give you 320i performance  :y

do the auto's take power increases? same box for all variants ?

mates e39 touring ate its auto box, it was chipped, but there was talk of a blocked/damaged oil cooler so not sure what the cause was.

I still keep thinking about changing mine for a 530d or 535d.

Its the first of the newer shape - 2003ish -> 2009ish? Which I love, but I cant really afford one yet.

What’s the running costs like on them vs 3.0 v6 I've got at the mo?
