Just had the renewal through for my insurance and it's ridiculously expensive due to my postcode >:(.
Thinking of selling the Omega :'(and going down the classic route as I can insure some nice stuff for peanuts i.e less than £100 fully comprehensive despite the postcode as I don't cover many miles these days.
Been offered a grand or so for the LPG miggy( would prefer a bit more though) so could get another Mercedes 190e or maybe an older 5 series.
I'm not going to rush into anything but would welcome suggestions of other motors for up to £2000 that would qualify for the classic jobbie!
Only other option would be to insure it at my dad's address but I am a legit person in that way.
Im 35 with 12 years NCB btw which is a real sickener!

You would run into all sorts of problems if you had to make a claim. If they found out you had used your dad's address as the owners address, they may well not pay out, cancel your insurance, and put a marker on the insurance database of what you've done, so where ever you go, it would be difficult to insure it cheap again !!. :-?
If you don't do many miles, have you tried to negotiate a lower premium by telling the insurance company that you do lower than average mileage - just a thought ?.
-
before selling, if you genuinely dont want to, ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWAYS argue with your insurance company, because the price they tell you to begin with is NEVER the lowest they can do!!
-
You need to shop around, that's the name of the game these days insurance wise.
You get nowt for being a loyal customer, new customers get better deals :y and theloyal one's pay the cost. >:(
Mine's only risen by £16 on last year's premium, and that was good at £176 for the TD estate, so happy with that (but I am an old git at 56 ;D) Had quotes of way over £200 to £300 last year.
Try Morethan, ok for me :y

It's £700-800 at the moment, tinkers!
-
[smiley=smiley_up.gif] What he said (before you, must type faster ;D). It pays to shop around every year for your insurance. So easy to do online, no need to get rid of your very nice-looking car :y
I'm 38 and mine cost about 400 quid this year. Better than 700 :y

Thats a scary price! What "L" postcode are you? I live in Skem which is also a high loading and admittedly I'm older than you and only have a 2.2 but £300-odd FComp. Definitely shop around.
A classic sounds nice but as an everyday car may be fraught with reliability issues :-/
-
As other's have said- Don't take the first quote. Shop around all the free phone numbers & play them against each other :y
If you don't do many miles like my self, tell them. That makes alot of difference.
-
Cheers guy's, I have been looking round but made no great progress. Seems its more expensive to insure third party? go figure
-
Merc 190 and/or 5-series likely to be more expensive to insure - they're more easily knick-able

I was running a 190e prior to the miggy, was around £120 fully comp on a classic policy
-
something very odd about your quote and you have 12 years ncb. Is someone else named as driver on policy - you may of course have points on licence or other adverse motoring history

I reckon they should charge you old gits more,as you tend to lose your marbles as you get older. ;D :D

OK, I'm not in a high risk postcode, but my MV6 is way under £200 FC, 39yrs old, 19yrs NCB
What other quotes have you had?

To expand a little:
I live in Liverpool's equivalent of Helmand province and am 35 with 12 yrs NCB.
I have never had a bump/claim
Car is garaged overnight
Got it down to£ 495 now but haven't informed of the LPG as yet, thats always good for an extra £50 >:(
Funniest quote was for TPF&T at £ 2568 ;D which comes up consistently more than comprehensive strangely ;D
The Silver beastie might burble for another year ;)

I found that the company with the iggy pop shouting all over their adverts became more reasonable after second or third time i entered my details. Im 35 and live in a bad postcode in manchester and park 2 litre CD on the street.
I know I could insure a focus or a astra for less but just take extra cost on the chin, basically because I dont want another astra or focus. It sucks to be paying half or more the value of your car in insurance every year when you have been driving nearly twenty years but Id still prefer to drive a nice car.
That said, Id be down the East Lancs like a shot to have a look at a 2.6 or 3litre LPG omega that still had a bit of life left in it.
-
ive just had my renewal through as well, nearly fell off the chair, its gone from £300 for my Cavalier to £1,500 for the Omega :o :o. I shopped around and managed to get it to £500 with 7 years ncb :y.
-
mine's not due til september but i just did a test quote with swiftcover.com and it looks like it might be the way to go when i do renew, although, when you initially get your quote you have to look on the right of the page... then modify everything they wrongly assumed!!!
i noticed one of the conditions of cover was that "your car is worth less than £30,000" but it doesn't say its actually been placed in the "£5,000-£30,000" bracket, as opposed to "under £5,000", so i changed all my vehicle details, added my alarm, lowered my annual mileage as it was 3000 too high and even added the missus as a named driver, and it took £300 off the price, and INCLUDES my aftermarket alloy wheels, stating that if they're worth less than £1000 they dont even need to know about them!! :y
knowing my luck, by september they'll change their ways and rob me blind!!
