Title: LPG Progress update
Post by: JamesV6CDX on 29 May 2010, 21:01:05
I've only been able to do a few hours in the evenings, and a little bit while dodging the rain today, due to work commitments - but - here is where I am at:

* Holed petrol tank removed and discarded.

* Toriodal tank mounted, in spare wheel well. I'm sticking with one tank, to keep the boot. Holes drilled (x 2) for the mounting bolts - and tank secured to the floor using self locking nuts and re-enforcing plates for extra security.

Hole drilled for pipe exits and vent pipe - everything made nice and gas-tight, so nothing can vent into the car :y

* Filler mounted, on towbar. It's not your usual towbar, so was worried at first - but have made up a really good bracket - was impressed with myself. It looks just like part of the towbar setup, unless you look hard.  :D

Tomasso (unsure of spelling) multivalve fitted. Along with fuel level gauge.

* Polyflex filler line ran from filler, to tank.

* Polyflex liquid feed line ran from tank, to engine bay. Found a really smart route for it - it enters the chassis rail for a few inches to avoid rear suspension - really works a treat... is obviously P clipped at correct invervals..

The connections in the tank are also really smart - managed to cut the pipes to just the right lengths, so no major excess floating around.

* Electrical wiring for fuel level sender, and rear 12v soleniod ran from back to front - following the LPG line

* New petrol tank mounted. Fitted in a slightly lower position than previously, to allow LPG tank to vent if needsbe. Petrol pump, level float installed and all reconnected.

The back-end of the conversion is now totally done - aside of just wanting to pop a protective sheath in, where the liquid line joins the chassis rail.

I did the first fill of LPG, tonight.... is a 70 toriodal tank - and filled to 55 litres.. about right.. no leaks or bangs...  :D

All in all, excellent progress... but have been on it for a few evenings, and have had a few complications... so I may just go for a shower and relax  :y

Agree - range is a bit poo.... but it's either that, or a great big tank across the back seats too  :-/

it would be ok if there were more stations, trouble i find is my main LPG watering hole Asda often has pump issues, so if they are down, its a good 40 miles to the next one thats not rip off price, even they had 1 pump down  >:(

Once you start using BP or other big chains with silly prices my pence per mile starts getting to 12/13p, which makes savings minimal  :(

Sorry to say, while it was good to convert my current car to gas, i'll be going diesel next  :(

Well in Cardiff - there is Asda pentwyn - BP Tudor Motors, and Morrisons - all at about 52/54ppl.... so in that neck of the woods I am laughing

In cheltenham, I just paid 62.9  :'(

Well Done James! :y

I’m going to LPG mine, I've decided...  8-)

Still not sure on the tank - should I get a toridal? or Big Cylinder that sits in the boot? Don’t know yet! :-/

What was the reason for you removing the petrol tank? Have I missed something? :-?

A) Is necessary, to route the LPG pipes and mount the tank in the spare wheel recess (as the petrol tank is directly below)

B) It had a bloody great hole in it  ;D ;D

Tunnie, even at BP prices, you are still saving - and remember the BP fills will be rare ;)

That said, as you know, I'll be at BP this morning after discovering that chavsville (Banbury to outsiders) doesn't have any 'public' LPG anywhere near :o. Chavtastic  >:(

Closest one (depending which side you are) was Shell at Chippy i think  :-/

BP may be expensive and I do try and avoid using them. BUT... It's still considerably cheaper than petrol :y :y

And I left 10,000 miles of rear rubber in the BP in Brackley.

Regular members will know what I think of the retards who work and run things there.  How the hell can they 'forget' to order LPG. I've always said it, but they are friggin' retards there.

Is your car an estate? mine is and just deciding on what type tank to get.
i want a wheel well tank but didnt think id be able to have the vent of a centre filled tank go through as the petrol tank is there.
could you show some pictures of what youve done with tank mounting and pipe routing please?
what dimensions is your tank
cheers

Other option is to go for a Full Toroidal... My preference would be a 4 hole, full toroidal, mounting it with the gas tight box towards the rear of the car making the pipe runs slightly easier and (I think) possible without removing the petrol tank :y

yeah thats what i was going to order, a 4 hole but i was just asking as the single holes work out a bit cheaper.
ive measured the wheel well to 650mm. how much would i need to allow for the gas box on a 4 hole?

You'd have to check with the tank supplier. But I believe it is mounted so that the box is in line with the top of the tank and possibly sticks out by about 10mm or so, hence mounting it with the valve at the rear of the car where the well is actually slightly bigger than 650mm IIRCC

I simply lowered the fuel tank a tad using some baton, to allow some space between the vent and the tank. No problemo  :y

Did you manage to sort all the original problems james.  Low fuel consumption etc.  :y

Hiya Skruntie  :D

There were 3 original problems -

1) Misfire. This has been sorted with new DIS, plugs and leads.

2) HUGE fuel consupmtion. This has been sorted by changing the fuel tank for one that doesn't have a great big hole in it :D

3) Blocked Cats/exhaust. New Cats have arrived -exhaust coming this week  :y :y

Further to the last, on the LPG..

Have now mounted vaporisor to inner wing (usual spot)

Liquid gas lines all hooked up to soleniod and Vaporisor. Really tidy job.

Coolant hoses ran to bridge, and HBV....

Vapor hose routed in an awesome position... hardly visible, filter is hidden, and the two injector block feeds emerge from under the scuttle...'

This is by far the tidest LPG install I've done .... I guess practice makes perfect  :y
