Title: Window Tints
Post by: JamesV6CDX on 06 May 2010, 22:39:32
Does anyone know a good place to get window tints done - properly and legally - at reasonable cost? :y

I'll do it for free...give me a can of black spray paint and it'll only take a few minutes  :D

Sorry, couldn't resist...do you want the film, or actual proper tinted replacement glass?

We have mirror film on all glass behind the doors on our estate and are very happy with the look and cooler interior.

You can buy the kits yourself, and it's no different to what the tinting companies will use.

Anything from the B pillar back can be as dark as "limo black", and if your car was first registered after April 85 then it must allow at least 75% light through the front screen and at least 70% light through the front side windows.

Note that 70% light does not mean you can have a 30% tint - glass does not let in 100% light.

Yep, IIRC, the standard glass in an Omega isn't far off the 70% limit as it stands so no level of tinting the front windows is a good idea.

Kevin beat me, but I was just going to say Omega windows already have a tint but I didn't realise it was this much.....

Had the same problem with my vec,had em tinted with the lightest shade they had, which still tipped it over the edge, and cops made me take em offat the roadside.Funny when the copper nearly fell down the bank though trying to pull it off. :D

I got GNU done in weston super mare -- is that too far ?  £160 for limo black rear of B pillars inc. rear screen. Lifetime g'tee.

Incidentally, on the subject of tints forward of the B pillar. I can't remember the wording now, but the way the relevant Act was worded could be construed as any film, regardless of tint, affixed to the windows forward of the B pillar could contravene the regulations.

You know what makes me laugh about the tinting laws?

You can't do jack to your car forward of the B pillar, but there isn't a law that says I can't have my helmet visor "limo black" if I so desire.
There is also no law whatsoever that says you can't wear "blues brothers" shades when driving either.

Go figure!

iirc dark visors where banned at one point, believe its now legal if you have a clear visor with you to replace dark visir with for night riding. But havent riden on road for years so may all have changed for bikes by now.

Gneneral idea was to be able to remove any dark tint at night. Visors and sunglasses can, axcessive tints cant.

from memory, if it's less than 80% transmissibility, it must say on the glass.

mind you, it just goes to show that different people have different views - the tints in mine annoyed me so much that I had to pull over half-way home from buying it to rip them out !

The main reason is other drivers can't see you, at junctions etc. Think about it, how often do you drive down the road & look at the person waiting at a side road to see if they've noticed you (especially when riding a bike ;))

all windows bar windscreen     or
all rear windows rear of b pilar        depending on cost.

Does it matter how dark? not sure without seeing the film.

You can have it as dark as you want on rear windows, just 2 front side windows, but thing is,you have 2 front side windows done,it might just tip you over the edge when it comes to the legal side of things, and probably end up ripping it off at the roadside, but personally i reckon it looks daft without em done,as it looks like the job hasent been finished. :-/

People: as regards to tinted motorcycle visors here, I speak from experience when I tell you that you can wear a tinted visor, as long as you have a clear one available to change immediately should you be stopped by the police.
They cannot do you if you have an IMMEDIATE alternative and fit it whilst they are present.

Mine has a dark tint on the rear doors and screen which is great at night as theres no glare from the cars behind you.

On the Manta we have used 3M Chrystal clear. Its not really a tint as such but is heat reflective.

Only one problem is its not available in the UK as we had to get this shipped from California where my customer lives, also had a big problem finding someone to fit it as it wasn't supplied by them and is thicker than normal tint.

Andy

hmmm, like the sound of this Andy, i aim to get a heat reflective screen at some point, i like the appearance of them from the outside and the benefits inside the car, would think the same finish on the side windows would also be legal as it is with the screen?

from memory the tinted visor's used to come under windscreen rules - so could'nt be tinted as plod could "not ascertain if the vehicle was under control"  >:( -even though there was a body astride the bloody bike !!

Mine is an Estate - does that make any difference?

Can you confirm, this is the rear door windows, to the back?

This is also fine - but, on the caveat that my car is repaired and drivable by then. I need to make it clear now, that if the car isn't sorted, I won't be able to get there :'(

well unless i hear from james i wont be going, as i understand it he's fitting an exhaust so he can drive his car in the morning, an exhaust which may not turn up, and if there's not 3 cars present we have to pay £145 as i understand it, which makes it unecinomical for me. I'll be paying over the odds with fuel bills.

I'm leaving as soon as i finsih work at 6 so i will grab a couple of z's in the car when i pull up hours early lol  :y :y

well unless i hear from james i wont be going, as i understand it he's fitting an exhaust so he can drive his car in the morning, an exhaust which may not turn up, and if there's not 3 cars present we have to pay £145 as i understand it, which makes it unecinomical for me. I'll be paying over the odds with fuel bills.

JAAAAAMES, are we going or are we not?

lol so if io hear nothing by 6 i will assume were not going ;) and i will head over to ashridge instead hahahahaha  :D
surely he knows if its been delivered by now?
anyone got his mobile number?

In addition - I understand it would have been £10 more per car without me? Therefore if you chaps had to pay this extra cost - I will re-imburse it.

Cheers,
James

You know what makes me laugh about the tinting laws?

You can't do jack to your car forward of the B pillar, but there isn't a law that says I can't have my helmet visor "limo black" if I so desire.
There is also no law whatsoever that says you can't wear "blues brothers" shades when driving either.

Go figure!

iirc dark visors where banned at one point, believe its now legal if you have a clear visor with you to replace dark visir with for night riding. But havent riden on road for years so may all have changed for bikes by now.

Gneneral idea was to be able to remove any dark tint at night. Visors and sunglasses can, axcessive tints cant.
ive ridden at 100 mph in the dark with a tinted visor,i was much younger and very stupid....and it was damn scary, wouldnt do it again or recommend it  8-)

Reminds me of the time I went Club 100 karting for the day at Buckmore Park.....

Lovely sunny day, tinted visor.....looked the dogs.......

However, the races over ran and the finals were staged after dark, under crap floodlights.....

Couldnt see a bloody thing and how I never killed myself or someone else God only knows....
