They're doing this of the 5 series forum so I thought I'd start it on here. What car do you think has the best sounding engine?
You get 3 choices so mine in no order are:
SAAB 9-3 Turbo X: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AJV2_DGavOQ
VW Golf MK 5 R32: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ASyc488CYzY&feature=PlayList&p=6AFD555D0D8D56EC&playnext_from=PL&playnext=1&index=30
Mercedes E63 AMG: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=424X5AcqeGY
I would've said 5 choices but I couldn't find a video of an 2003 onwards XJR :'(

Ahh, now you've got a point there. :y
They do provide a perfect soundtrack to a chinese meal at the Shanghai des 24 Heures (about 20 feet from the trackside).

This sound still quickens my heart, there's nothing like a Pig at full chat threading its way through the back-streets :-* :-* (Not Burton-on-Trent) ;D ;D
Although the sound on the video is the engine/transmission note from the Ferret armoured car on which the camera was mounted, the Pig produced essentially the same note.
The engine used in each was a Rolls Royce B60 4.5lt 6cylinder unit also used in some early Silver Cloud models.

There's nothing like the note produced by a simple straight eight all the same :-* :-*

No discussion of straight 8's would be complete without one of these: :-*

I actually have one of those in a Vanden Plas 4-litre R
Mind you, there's also Challenger 2 - 26 litres of unsilenced diesel

The Pig was also used by the RUC in the early years of the disturbances (and before that) these vehicles were painted either white, dark blue, military green or grey.
The thing about the Pig was the sound that it made - as I mentioned before - however on a light throttle at unhurried speeds you could hardly hear them.
The armoured Landrover (based on the 110 chassis) was a natural but very necessary progression from the grp plating that was put onto vehicles to offer crews some protection from bricks, nail bombs and so on - but not from high velocity ballistic impact.
The first incarnation of this vehicle, if I remember, was the Hotspur which featured full ballistic armour and glass, the tyres were run flat insofar as there was a band placed in the well of the wheel that prevented the tyre from running off the rim.
Later incarnations were called Simba, Tangi and Tanga and were developments of the original Hotspur vehicle with improved armour, access, accessories etc.
Needless to say these vehicles needed the V8 to cope with the additional weight carried - and you're quite right K, at night you could hear them from miles away. :y
Some photographs of Tangi models:

Bloke opposite has a BDA engined mk2 escort with twin webers. That sounds rather nice, also brings back memories from following the circuit of Ireland rally around the countryside in the 70,s.

This set off life as a 1600 yellow escort (company car) and slowly turned into BDG beastie and won it's class in the lombard amongst other rallies.

Sounded nice as well did the HS Chevette that his elder brother rallied.
