on this forum that have destroyed engines due to cambelt failure.I only ask because it seems to be an absolute must change at 40k or 4 years?

been several, I was a (very) unlucky one...

Kit was faulty and managed about 5 miles!

Heads off, new valves etc, all thanks to Mark DTM

We had just swapped the heads on mine, new cambelt kit, on the test drive a new tensioner let go....clatter clatter clatter  :'(

Never tried, Mark rebuilt my engine using the parts we had previously removed, and fixed the kit.

Too much hassle being stranded 100 miles from home etc, priority was to get mobile again, the money cost was luckily small, but the man hours high.

4 pots more prone to it because waterpump is cambelt driven, i've seen number of posts on 4 pot cambelt failures due to water pump

Why risk it?

Cost a damn sight more if it did let go through being on there too long.

is it because these engines are 16valve because i've had 5 cav 8 valve cars and i've had cambelts go on at least 3 of them with no damage to the valves etc whatsoever?

8 valvers are a different kettle o'fish!
Guess you mean this car :
"Drives: 1999 2.5 gls with black leather"

Which means you got 24 valves and four camshafts to worry about.

All Vauxhall 8 valve engines are normally "Safe" (no matter what the book says) and is worth chucking a new belt on.

All Vauxhall Multi-valve engines are "interference" and will bend valves at a minimum.
