A guy at my work has been quoted £570 for a engine on his old 316 that including fitting and he asked them how much it would be if he got the engine himself and they said about £400 is that about right?
-
£170 to fit an engine isn't too bad if its a "reasonable" garage, not a little back-street one man band situation (overheads, wages, new oil/filter etc) but if its a "i'll throw it in, you can do eveything else" job, No.

My 316 (E36, with the 1.6 engine not the 1.8) has loads of room around the engine bay and in all honesty, changing the engine in it, doesn't look too big a job to do (essentially Gearbox, Mounts, etc) and not a large number of sensors kicking about... With the right equipment to hand, I would expect a knowledgable mechanic to easily swap one over in less than a day...

so is £400 to fit is not to bad then?

Reasonable garage, no, not too bad.

But double that if he supplys a dud engine, if they supply a bad one then what happens then?
