Title: Oil additives....any good?
Post by: Field Marshal Dr. Opti on 21 July 2010, 13:21:06
My 99,000 mile 2.6 sounds..(for want of a better word)....a little "tappety"on start up. This  disappears after a second or two. Has anyone tried Slick 50 or any other oil additive. Apparently ....these products are supposed to stick to the internal metal parts and reduce start up clatter.....are they any good?

Ive heard the best thing to do with slick 50...is avoid it.

Wynns lifter treatment is meant to be worth a go though  :y

Less than a tenner IIRC sell it at Halfords or most good motor factors :y

Slick 50 does what it says on the tin, but also starts to thicken the oil in place's which then start to harden and block breathers etc.

I wouldn't touch Slick50 with a bargepole. Snake oil.

A bit of lifter treatment perhaps, but wouldn't advise anything other than regular oil changes.

I have used restore, motor up, power up, fin 25 teflon etc etc..

Restore was really impressive..  Especially cars older than 10 years build up nearly the original power.. :-?
and was effective more than 20K kms..(although they say 60-80 K)

others also helpful but last only 3-4K Kms.. Then their effect diminishes..

And never seen any engine damaged by them..

However looking at their prices, for a good condition engine Mobil 1 would be a better bet and cheaper imo..

And one risk discussed on the net was the clogging of oil filter especially by teflon additives in excessive usage resulting with high pump pressure..But as I said never seen such an example..
