Title: Project LPG estate - Part 2
Post by: Marks DTM Calib on 19 June 2007, 20:10:42
Have now done a bit more.......

So, start at the back and work forward so up in the air and do the rear brakes.....which is where the first snags were found.

Now this car has loads of history and its had a fair wack of cash spent on it to, one of these jobs included new rear disks, pads, shoes and handbrake cables.

So I was dissapointed (but not surprised) to find errors, namely the fact that the back plate return springs on the handbrake cables were missing on both sides, these also stop the cable from detaching from the lever to so not good. To add to this, they were poorly adjusted and the cable was way to tight.

So, sorted that out and also found a broken anti-rattle spring on one of the sets of rear pads to.

Whilst there, springs, shocks, brake lines, wheel bearings, suspension bushes etc were all checked and brake lines and nuts and bolts etc were greased (an old habit).

Brake fluid was fully flushed and changed.

Then onto the front, again disks and pads fairly recently, did the NSF first and checked every thing out and all looked fine, no play in the wishbone bushes, change the brake fluid, strip and clean the pads and discs, file a leading edge chamfer to the pads, more grease etc etc etc.

So, fit the road wheel and check for play....ow dear, quite a bit on all axis.....get the wife to press the brake pedal, its gone......listening stick required....NSF wheel bearing is buggered......

Right OSF next......same process pads, discs and the the good stuff, yet more grease etc etc...

Then refit the road wheel and do the usual tests again....play at 3-9 Oclock so must be steering....check track rods, there new, check idle arm, thats new......then noice the the nut on the control arm end of the idler is 4 mm clear of the idler arm.....so some Bloody muppet has forgotten to tighten it up (its a lock nut so hasnt come undone)......so tighten it up correctly and all is good again.

So jobs to do before the MOT

Check the lights etc
Fit new anti rattle springs to the rear pads
Fit handbrake return spring to both sides and adjust the handbrake cable
Fit new NSF hub assembly

NSF hub wants replacing?
See if you can get any discount on a pair of them, my nsf is also slightly sloppy.

You will be wanting the use of Megan, the mega wrench then. ;)

Having seen a hub done, it should be a quick job (for us normal people, probably about an hour), but you do need some BIG tools....

Ive got a big tool.

I bought it from Halfords to do this particular job and it goes upto 300nm which is close enough

I bet its not as big as the one Matchless has got!  ;D

Anyway, rear brakes and handbrake cable etc all done and adjusted, cable return springs are all fitted and tyres pumped up.

Thats pretty much all the mechanical, suspension and drive train stuff done, although the the auto box gear linkage needs adjusting slightly.

Next job is to check all the electricals and internal fittings ready for a MOT.

Ok, all the lights are checked and adjusted as required.

Needs 4 new indicator bulbs (all a bit white) and a new numebr plate bulb (fitted).

Also needs a front number plate as its broken......all required parts on order and then its onto the internals before the MOT and one hell of a clean!

Ok, a bit more work was compelted last night by Laidback66 and myself

New number plate fitted
Steering column surround re-fitted
Drivers door card re-fitted
New indicator bulbs all round (they were white!)

Plus a quick soap down and start of the interior clean starting with the boot area.........I think Mr Laidback was slightly surprised by my approach to this but, it works well!

A lot more cleaning to do and it has its MOT on Saturday morning!

Yes Marks approach to interior cleaning is certainly effective!  :)

Not sure what go me more wet though, the rain or Mark with a pressure washer!  ;D

If it passes on Saturday morning (and it bl**dy well should do!) then it will be up for sale Saturday afternoon! :)

Have to say, drove it last night and damn it is good!

Stop Press - Project LPG Elite Estate pass its MOT....

....with two advisories..

1) Wishbone bushes worn - Now replaced
2) Screw in a rear tyre - Will be fixed

Well done to Mr Laidback who lost his wishbone virginity today!

Slightly annoyed about the tyre as I checked them carefuly but, it could have been picked up on the way to the MOT station.

So, it has a ticket and the cleaning has started.......tyre to fix and jobs a good un!

Yes folks, finally, this is just about ready to go now it has a shiny new MOT. :)

Find me another 3.0 Elite estate with a full sequential lpg installation (certified), everything working, virtually new tyres, discs, pads and having a tank in the spare wheel well so you lose none of the huge estate carrying capability!

Oh, and it happens to have had the Marks DTM treatment, so EVERYTHING is done!
Cambelt kit, water pump, oil cooler, cam cover gaskets, brake fluid (properly!), coolant... etc etc.

This will go on ebay next weekend and will generate a LOT of interest
(especially if you live/work in London as this will mean no congestian charge!)

If you are in the market for an lpg estate, you will be very hard pressed to find a better one!

You might be stuck here - I looked into this and just having LPG is not enough - it MUST be a certified installer with a certified car - basically every combination was covered - only Omegas were the factory fitted ones.

CHeck for yourself on their web site just in case rules have changed

But was he a government approved installer?

One way to tell is the V5......is it down as an alternative fuel vehicle.....if its says petrol......then probably not  :(

My Omega was convertered by an lpga approved installed but not government approved.....therfore i pay the full road tax and cannot get congestion charge exempt.  :(

Will have to check, it was done by Autogas

I tried to get my Omega V5 changed to alternative fuel (it has to say this to get congestion charge exempt or cheap car tax) but the dvla refused to change it even tho i showed them the lpga certificate.

I think theres a list of government approved installers somewhere on the interwebby.....think its called the powershift register or summat like that

Just had a quick look on the interwebby......Goverment approved installers for vx's seem to be Vauxhall Motors Ltd, Millbrook and Alternative Fuel Systems.

It has to be a 'Band 4' type installation.....to stand any chance of getting it changed on the V5.

The different banding sigifies how much rubbish comes outa the zorst......i think mines a 'band 3' installation.

Tho both my veccyB and veccyC were converted by Millbrook.......so James will be pleased.....dont think i mentioned it to him......only £120 road tax/year for the veccyB  :y

Hmmm....will have to do some digging.

It was installed by Nicholson McLaren Engines Ltd who are on the register.....

Come on guys, do we look like amateurs? ;)

It is on the V5 as Petrol/Gas, so yes it is an officially recognised and fully certified installation!  :)
