Title: Project Jimbob
Post by: Jimbob on 03 June 2010, 20:32:54
Been a while since weve had one of these, so thought I'd keep a running log on what im doing on my new 52 plate 3.2 MV6

Bought knowing it needed everything serviceable servicing...

Im going to be doing this an hour or 2 at a time over a few weeks, so no miracles here, other that the fact I am attempting my most major work to date, and a short few years ago, I had never even done an oil change, but with some DTM guidance, and help from various others on here, and the guides, I will now have a go at a lot of jobs  :y

No real rush to the job, Ill finish before I swap my insurance over, this is to replace my aging 98 MV6 as the new 'family workhorse'
eventually planning LPG too.

I am guessing you'll be interested in seeing the pics of my 70l toriodal tank in the estate, and the (slightly) raised boot floor to accomodate it?  :y

Cheers all.

Now back from a week in Keswick.... and was hoping to get straight back into it....

However due to a small health issue, its gonna be taking a back seat for a week or 2  :'( :'( :'( :'(

While away a cyst in my chest decided to become infected and grow, and then burst....some what spoilt the holiday being under doctor / hospital.

I currently have a hole, about an inch diameter in my chest, weeping rather nasty gunk, and im on horse strength antibiotics.

pic here for the non squeamish - deliberately not just embedded the image

Cheers.

Initial hopes were to go to the lakes in it last week...

then hopes to come to the keswick meet in it next week.

No way will I have the ability to do the remaining bits before then, and then MOT it  :'(

looks like the old car has a stay of execution yet.  ;D

Well my chest isnt holding me back fully anymore, so did a couple of light jobs in a spare half hour tonight, and want to get it sorted now..

Swapped the Tax and plates over now the cherished transfer is done
put in the new pollen filter
new wiper blades all round
new rear wiper arm
played with bonnet release.
fixed a vac leak in the bagpipes vac pipes with some airline tubing.

main purpose was to get rid of some of the spares out the boot  ;D

hopefully get some more done over the next few nights.

Went out hoping for a good evenings work...

Thermostat bolts removed
freed it off the coolant pipe...

onto my 1st attempt at the B-bolt...

Once I'd actually found it, tried a socket, dropped and lost it,
tried a spanner, and pain across my chest  :'(

Gonna have to admit defeat for a bit longer yet i'm afraid  :'( :'(

/me stamps his feet yelling I want my car

Ahh well

To do...

Thermostat
Cam / Aux belt + waterpump
wishbones, track rod ends, and rear springs.

Well im unfortunately still not up to doing much on the car  :'(

So it is with Massive thanks to Elite Pete that the thermostat has been changed, along with the cambelt kit et al  :D :D :D :D :D

B Bolt lived up to its name...looks like when I attempted it and gave up sharpish due the pain I must have slipped with the spanner. :-[

then should be ready for the MOT and swapping my insurance over  :D :D :D

With even more thanks to Pete, today he did the wishbones, and outer track rod ends  :y

I wish I had bought the full track rod's though....

cos it just failed its MOT on the inner joints,  :'( still I am up to doing those, so Monday should be on the road.

(also failed on headlight aim, but they have adjusted that, was way out, but thought it was due to a knackered level sensor, but even with that working the aim was wrong)

In the not too distant future will give it new front disks and pads, and tidy up the brake lines, and it will need new rear subframe bushes too.

Driving nicely though  :D

At least the end is in sight now
Title: Re: Project Jimbob
Post by: feeutfo on 15 July 2010, 18:17:10
Good work gents.

I also found a failed track rod end today. Drivers outer giving almost 7mill of play in the 3-9 "o cock" position. Arse!.......also giving a good clonk noise over larger bumps.
Title: Re: Project Jimbob
Post by: Elite Pete on 15 July 2010, 18:20:05
Cheers for the A'bunadh James and thanks to Ljay for keeping me fed and watered :y

The MOTer was a bit tight failing it on the inner track rod end, there was only the nearside one that had any significant play in it :(

Oh well its and easy enough job ;)

Also let off an aircon cleaner bomb

All ready for its retest on Monday, and geometry asap

Then its bye bye blue, hello red  :D :D :D :D :D

Cant remember the exact story...1st time Mark got in the car he didnt like the dash, turned out the airbag wasnt attached.

He managed to sort it all out somehow, but I havent a torx bit that doesnt spin in one of the bolts that holds the glovebox in.

Easy enough to sort with a file or sommat....but Im not that bothered.  It can stay.

Quite impressed with the Gliptone, and didnt smell as much as I expected  :D

Gits at the garage turned me away for a retest as they were too busy, booked in for Thursday.  So much for me using them to make life easier.  Never again.

Think I'll try Nigel Langs in Bolton for the alignment now, and get it done properly.  They can do the subframe bushes too  :y

That will do the job although we normaly use one with a slightly longer boss on it (no big deal to be honest)

Sigh. I suppose, being a 3.2 owner, I need to learn to expect to see these codes at some point.

Mind you, I have had some successes with the welder:

The grill element on her cooker
A stand I made for her
Bracket for the RAID card in the OOF server (long story)
Fallic 'growths' inside Goldie before it was scrapped ::)

dunno if I was doing it wrong...but once I undid the 10000nm torque the last bloke had used, it still seemed an awful lot of effort given the socket size needed to undo it.

Ive done an entire oil and filter change with the old system in the time it took me to remove the new cap.  :-/

Once the cap is replaced correctly, I find it takes about same time. If anything, marginally less messy.

Some see the code from 50k, mine has 0430 currently which returns a week after clearing, but no light on yet. 100,000k came up last week.

Think the parameters are too narrow as LPG set at 1.1 pings the light on, but 1.6 bar turns it off with no code clearing required.  :-/

I wonder if the filter cap sticks the longer oil changes are left. And I think that one has been left a very log time.....and the monkey swinging on the wrench too of course.

Stopped off at the local hand car wash, and £6 later she looks like :

She needs a really good claying and polishing up, obviously been through a car wash or 2 in her past life, but thats a job for another day.

Ill agree to that....

Just had a go at claying and polishing...

can certainly see and feel the difference,  but something more aggressive is needed, some shallow scratches and swirling along with some oxidization i'd like rid of.  Prob a machine polish job.

the rain has beaten me, but pretty much done the wings and bonnet.

Polishing can be quite fun on times, but does take it's time  ;D
I've just spent the day cleaning my new purchase, and being black it takes ages. I've given up now  :D
There are a few minor bits I'll have painted, and normally when I send it in, the whole vehicle comes out fully polished for free...so I may just not bother  ::)
That does look very nice Jimbob, and from the pictures, I can't see a spot of rust under the tailgate wiper spindle which is pretty rare to find on the estate's.

 ;D sure thing!
Actually, in all seriousness some time I'll come and collect your MV6 and take it over to the guy and get a quote for you, and see what he can do...or we can go together, whatever you'd prefer. Won't be expensive, but I'm sure it'll tidy it up nicely. I'll just 'borrow' the CID when you're not looking  ::)

Cheers, the body is virtually rust free, just the very bottom of the arches is visible once the rear doors are open, ill cut it out and treat.

Yup, tailgate is rust free, so fitted a new wiper arm to help keep it that way

After about 700 miles, I dropped the oil last night, bloody hell, was disgusting!  how it can get so bad in a short space I do not know!

Didnt have a filter in stock, so was just the oil.

Ill be doing it again in 500 or so miles so not too worried.

Not very impressed with the brakes, so got a new set of front disks and pads to go on, but that can wait till sometime after my little op this week.

That's what I want to know.........when i bought my car, I had to do a couple of 2k oil changes before it looked even a bit cleaner!  That FORTE oil cleaner stuff is good though.......but you have to do a short change after using that too as it removes just about everything. I removed and cleaned out the sump as well, made a real difference, my engine is really quiet now.

I suspect TB3's oil will need some regular quick changes - it was rank when MDTM and I did it a couple of weeks back.

Only done a couple of hundred miles since then, so will give it another couple of hundred...
