Right. Vauxhall have produced Auto's with this feature for donkeys years.
I have had several Omega's now, and not a single one (all 3.0) has made the slightest difference when in Sports Mode. In the normal Economy mode, when you plant your foot through the Firewall, it will redline in every gear and accelerate as fast as the engine will allow. I understand that if you engage Sports Mode and drive normally, it will not change up as quickly as usual, and will lock out overdrive (unless you hit an indicated 131MPH (as I found out tonight (on a private road))), but why have sports mode on if you aren't giving it the beans?
Other Vauxhalls I have driven with the Auto Box (smaller engined varieties), the Sports Mode has made a small difference, hanging onto the gears for slightly longer, but that's all.
So, Omega Compadre's, does that little 'S' button really help with performance in the Omega? :-/
-
That's quite right. Sport mode makes no difference to flat out acceleration. If the pedal is on the floor it will always upshift at the red line or thereabouts.
What sport mode does do is hold onto the lower gears for longer during normal driving so it's more responsive when you want to accelerate out of a bend, for example, because it will already be in a lower gear.

I find sports mode makes a big difference, holds the revs for longer, especialy when de-acelarating, on corners ready at for the right revs for the next road.
:y :y

I think you're missing the point of driving an automatic car .... ::) ::) ::)
-
I think you are missing the point of the poll! :)
Clue is in the question! ::)
Does it make a difference to acceleration? :-/
-
Comes in handy coming along St Peters way, or speedcam alley as it's known.
Hit the button and the box changes down providing a bit of engine braking for the camera and a sprightly take off after the lines.
Five cameras in a two mile or so stretch of dual carriageway for gods sake.

I wonder if Bolton & Bury have the same b4lls as Oxford and turn the buggers off ::)

I read the poll ;).... but you're missing the point by driving an auto. If you want b4lls out acceleration you need 3 pedals :y

Not missing the point at all, when accelerating from previous braking before hand makes a big difference on acceleration.

Couldn't agree more. A Manual is a 'divers' car.... but you dont get a Sports Mode button on a Manual Omega. ::)
-

you need a submarine for that ::)

why would you need one when you have 3 pedals? :-? :-? :-?

Well, then you did miss the point. Kevin didn't, and answered the 'question'. Perhaps I should have made the point clearer, but I was refering to acceleration from a stand still.
I get what 'S' does, but a few 4 pot Cav's, Astra's, Corsa's, Tigra's I've driven have responded well with 'S'.... changing up at a later rev point. Maybe it's because of the BMW transmission in the Omega?

lol. Apologies for the spelling mistake, and kudos for picking it up in such a humorous way.
You wouldn't need one in a Manual.... when did I say you did? Oh, wait..... Astra has a 'Sport' button does it not? Stiffens steering and livens up throttle response.... apparently.

where did the Astra come from .............. :-? ;) and do they do a V6 Astra? ;)

Hellsmere Port it says so on the sign (or it used to).

not a V6 though .... which was part of the original poll ;) ;) ;)

As was 'Auto' so why mention 'Manual'? :o

Give me my old Pontiac back with it's 3 speed auto I wold give any standard Omega a sec head start and wave to you on the way back to the start line. ::)
-
is this the perdantic time of night of what..
flat out in a v6 auto, does the sport button make any difference.
i agree with k w. flat out change ups are maxed rev wise anyway..
-
Personally I don't see the need to use the Sport Button :-? I have obviously pressed it and other than the top part of the roof coming away then the poor passenger ending in the roadside ::) all it seemed to do was hold the revs longer.....
-
Shame the Fizzy hasnt got a sport button. :P :D ;D
I rarely use it either,I drive like an old granny these days, but iirc it makes the box kickdown at lower revs than it normally would. :-/
-
it does nothing for the outright "book figure" acceleration, because in doing this you'd be holding the trans in kickdown.
what it does do is hold onto gears for longer, is keened to down-select for overtaking and makes the shift firmer (quicker).
so in outright acceleration - no difference
and in the real world, yes it'llbe better
-
who cares?
-
I use the sport mode when towing as it lets the engine rev out more in each gear
-
nope.. totally useless.. anyway I drive it like a manual (1,2,3) when required..
-
It should be no different in a straight line than having your foot planted and therefore kickdown activated.
on the twistys, does keep the revs up so aids take off after bends, and helps avoid unneccessary hunting.
-
No, it does not make a difference from a standing start acceleration.
It may make a difference on a rolling start acceleration, due to it probably being in a lower gear at the time.
-
Yes it makes a big difference, as when I kick down it holds the low gears longer, giving vastly increased revs, and boosting my progress up past 100mph when having to overtake a line of slow moving (below 45 mph) vehicles. The manoeuvre, providing I have plenty of clear road in sight, then becomes much safer using the 'S' mode 8-) 8-) 8-)
-
Looks like an arguement best settled at the york meet if you are allowd on the strip.
2 cars 1 in SM other not
then do 2 directional runs, one each way.
then the car that was using SM tuen it off and the other turn it on and 2 more runs each.
Set the distance first.

DLK is the offical prize giver in his privaye tent. ::)

Based on the results of this poll so far either the placebo effect is in full swing or there are a lot of Omegas out there with bust kickdown switches. ;D

Well, there's an interesting concept. If you could develop the dexterity to control a couple of flappy paddles perhaps a sequential gearbox might be an interesting upgrade. ;D

Sports mode will make NO difference from a standing start (esp with later g/box s/w) as the change will still happen at redline if foot is planted, irrespective of Sports mode or not.

A badly adjusted throttle cable will mean the kickdown switch doesn't activate

Th only Auto Mig i've driven was Richard Irvs 2.6 MV6 at the OOF dragstrip at the last Yorkmeet. We swapped cars for two runs. I'd had a few!!! & first run i forgot the sport button & 2nd run i shifted the gears manually. Much better, she flew!
Of course if you really want get off the line quickly buy a Cheeky little MX5. Pete made his point!!!!

as others have said, seems to make no difference on mine if your talking 0-60 from a standing start, but if dropped into 3rd and S button selected for overtaking or windy roads I do see an improvement. From doing about 30-40 Ive done this and left the scooby that was up my a*se behind while his turbo lag caught him out too ::)Id never go back to a manual now as an auto is just so much more stress free for the driving conditions I do now. Would obviously love a manual with a bit of poke like an integra or something just for windy road fun but the two are really not comparable as they are two differnt beasts designed to do two different things. Like my creature comforts too much these days :y

Overdrive?
Wondered why mine was at 6,000 revs at 125 mph! LOL! ;D ;D ;D
I'm sure I read in the Omega book that it gives it more fuel.

Voted that from the start because, as many have stated, the sport button has no effect on a standing start, just rolling acceleration :y :y
-
So we can just presume that the sports button holds to revs longer then.

Nothing to presume... That's what it does ;) ;)
Oh... And as the G/B ECU is a "Learning" unit, if you drive it hard normally (without the S button pressed) then there's not an awful lot of difference ::) ::)
