Title: filters purpose

 :question on a 2.5 td their is a small inline type filter near the power steering reservoir. whats its purpose. the one on my mig is the same one as when i first purchased it. (7yrs) it looks ok.  :-/ :y

Is it connected to the pipe work that goes to the p/s reservoir?
If so then I'd guess it's a filter for the p/s/ fluid!?

no, it just happens to be attatched to a vacuum pipe near the p/s reservoir  . hoofing it in a thread advised it to be replaced. i dont know what the purpose of this filter is & how often it wants changing  :-/

Its the air feed to the vac solenoid that operates the EGR.

This might sound odd but, in order to destroy the vac, the solenoid has to allow air in....the little fitler stops crudd going in from under the engine bay
