Title: Ford Probe hydraulic lifters ?

Workmate has a probe which started sounding very "tappy" from one bank of cylinders. A probe "expert" had a listen and diagnosed sticky lifter(s), which sounds logical.
Owner dismantled top end , removed lifters, cleaned, tested etc. found that 3 of them didnt seem to operate as smoothly as the others so replaced them with new ones.
Put everything back together and was surprised to hear that it sounded as bad as it was before he dismantled it.
Any ideas please ? Tia. :-/

He says the noise is definitely coming from the rear (awkward) bank. Sounds like a pretty similar arrangement to the VX V6, so hoping somone might have similar experience and be able to throw in some ideas.
Could tell him to drop a Vx V6 in there I suppose. ;D

Not sure tbh Guffer, he said he let it tick over for about 15 mins. but it didnt get any quieter. :-/

Maybe the cam oil feed is getting starved?

Common on those units.

Do check its got a top notch oil filter, I saw one many years ago with a Fram one and it was restricting the oil feed!

Also check oil pressure as these are a bit prone to sludging up (what does the cam area look like when viewed through the oil filler?)

Uses Mazda filters (better than Ford apparently) synthetic oil, area around cams etc had lots of oil around it when dismantled. Seems confident that there was no oil supply problem.
Ddint prime the lifters before fitting as apparently they sit up too far and make it diificult/impossible to fit the cams. After starting up all lifters were initially noisy but quickly quitened down apart from (probably) one. Plan is to renew all lifters on the rear bank.Has tried lifter treatment twice,changed oil and filter (twice iirc)
If that doesnt cure it I have offered £20 for it. :)
