Title: Belt Schreech
Post by: davethediver on 20 August 2010, 19:40:25
Silly question time and not for the omega. A ford focus.

How can you tell the difference between a cam belt squeal and a fan/aux belt squeal. Which one changes with revs?

Confused Dave :-[

Take the aux belt off and run the engine briefly.

A cam belt squeal is closely followed by a clatter and engine failure.

as delicately put by mark, cambelts dont squeal as such. (can do if fitted overtight but they dont last long)

aux belt tensioner is the problem.to diagnose spray the belt with wd40 and it will probably disapear.

the tensioner sticks in one position and does not retension the bellt.

moving the tensioner about with a 15mm long spanner will temp cure it, longterm . change the tensioner.

A 'fan belt/aux belt can screech due to lack of friction between the belt and crank pulley.
A cam belt is very unlikley to screech because they're a timing belt ie they have teeth and are directly driven, not just relying on friction.  :y

Cure all spray it is then, probably due a new belt, just confused as sometimes its there sometimes it isn't. Timing belt is only twenty thousand old and had the full kit done.

Thanks guys :y
