Next year i will have to start travelling approx 30 miles each way to work and i am considering buying a secondhand late model Astra deisel to travel to and from work.
Not knowing to much about these cars i was wondering which is the best secondhand one to go for. They have two models, the 1.7 and 1.9.
I am obviously looking at economy, reliability, price as well as comfort.
Has anyone here got any knowledge on these cars and what to look out for etc.
Cheers

My son had a 1.7 CDTi SRi 5 door on a 05 plate. It was a nice car and regardless of how he drove it the fuel rarely dropped below 45mpg even around town and would do about 60mpg on a run. I liked it and it went well considering it was only about 100 bhp. It gave him no grief in the four years he owned it. The 1.9 is obviously quicker but I have no experience of these.:y :y

1.9 are much better engines than 1.7
These are Fiat/Alfa units and were their best engines during that period.
Old Astra's were cr... (first models) but they've been improving steadily over the years so now are preety good.
My uncle has one (3 years old model) and is pretty content just he isn't happy with the engine which is 1.6.
So I guess go for a diesel.
Just don't expect mig comfort ;D

I think there are actually two 1.9 units, 120 and 150 units. The 120 is an 8v engine and the 150 a 16v unit.
I think that if the badge on the back is all silver then its the 120, wheras the 150 CDTi badge has some red in it.

We have a 2005 Astra 1.8 auto. So far it has been 100% reliable. Go for the better models like Design or Elite, as these have more comfortable seats and more toys.
