Title: Oil cooler pipes
Post by: Elite Pete on 22 August 2010, 20:06:15
A few months ago I noticed the oil cooler pipes on my diesel were rotten and oil was weaping from them so as a temporary measure I cut them and sheathed them in a rubber pipe using jubilee clips at each end. Well the temp repair let go yesterday making a right mess. Ive spent this afternoon removing the alternator, power steering pump, battery and tray to get the old pipes out but unfortunately the new secondhand pipes I have bought are different so won't fit :( Looks like its £120 for the Vauxhall ones as we're supposed to be going away this week, sods law :'(

What a mess its made ::)

Rather a mess indeed.. I think this is a job I need to do on mine, too (based on where I see wetness while peering down from the top with a torch).

When you do the job, you couldn't stop and take a few pics of the pipe routing etc, could you?

Not looking forward to the bill, though, if the only option is VX ones! :-/

EP's patent rust prevention system. ;D

Have you tried your local hydraulic hose makers? They may be able to make some pipes up cheaper than VX prices Pete.

Look up hydraulic pipes in the yellow pages.  Generally a few sevices locally, I used one when my Power steering pipe split on my Camaro.  Took the old one, made me an identical one and pressure tested it to 3000psi.

£3/4 cash in hand as the boss was out.  ::)

Incidentally, Pete, is it a 2.5 or a 2.2 that you're replacing the pipework on?

yeh they do cost if you go through the company, but i used a guy that fixed my truck hydraulics, so go mates rates, and they were the only national company i could think of when posting!!
howevfer any hose maker should be able to do it, it only needs new pipe/hose swaged on to the old connectors! :y

Got them sorted today by a local chap for £30. It's taken all day to get them fitted (inbetween the rain) so all i've got to do is refit the alternator, power steering pump, auxiliary belt and viscous fan oh and I might as well do the oil filter before refilling with fresh oil just hope it stops raining long enough ;)

It's a 2.5 :(

Well.. at least now I know how difficult it's going to be for me ;)

Hopefully it won't be pi**ing down with rain when I choose to do it, though!  :P

Its not that bad a job really, its just dirty and very fiddly. The pipes come from the oil cooler, through a little gap and then back along the inner wing to the oil filter. You have to remove the power steering pump and the alternator to allow enough room to jiggle the pipes out and of course there's manky oil constantly dripping like chinese water torture ;D

Ahh, my favourite.. I'll definitely do those over my friends pit.. I'm used to ending up covered in oil when I'm in there anyway (engine oil, gearbox oil, diff oil.. and very rarely from my car!)  ;D

Did you get the new hoses swaged onto the old fittings, or complete new hoses made up?

Damn, I was going to ask if I could borrow your old hoses to have them copied ..  ;D

Guess I'll get new hoses put onto the old fittings, too, then :)
