More Go, same engine family

LS1 (original Monaro) - 5.7l
LS2 (later Monaro, early VXR8) - 6.0l
LS3 (Later VXR8) - 6.2l

mine's an LS1, but still puts out 390 bhp - you'd find that enough for most situations.

but auto though - why have a performance car and then hamper it with an auto box ? this I'll never understand.

Because they change up automatically to reduce wheelspin  ::)  (Joke before you all start having a pop at me - was going to add that that was thier automaticlly controlled traction controll as well ::) ::))

Because modern Auto Transmissions can change gear quicker than any racing driver, can handle greater torque than a manual coupled to a clutch etc etc etc.

Many reasons.  :y

I think it would look better if it was styled a little more conservatively, to make it more of a sleeper, which would be a brilliant contrast against its performance, surprising all! :P

Hmm. Being able to select a gear based on the road ahead, and having a decent spread of ratios rather than what can be achieved with a couple of stages of epicyclic gears trumps all of that, IMHO. Yes, autos are great for commuting, but for any enthusiastic driving at all, it has to be a manual IMHO.

I once had access to a Dodge Magnum 2500 5.7l V8. This is the twin cab pick up. I'm assuming this is similar if not the same engine as the LS1. I think it was rated at 340 bhp, not sure about torque, but lots! The suspension was absolutely shockingly bad unless on perfectly flat smooth roads, but the performance and acceleration was absolutely amazing for straightline acceleration. Had some scary (fun) back end out moments!) :-/

that's why I particularly like the Commodore - it looks just like an early Omega, it's really only the noise that alerts you  ;)

Yeah i know what you mean, as much as what i like VX I'm not a great fan of their extrovert styling on vxr models. If I could get my hands one a 4 litre Senator, that would be it. I wonder how many were made?

There was a winch containing one of those (I think) at the gliding club last week for testing. Weather closed in before we got a change to play with it, though. :(

would have been worth starting up, even if you just towed that double-decker up and down the runway  ;)

Oh, got it started, and it was sat purring away awaiting its first victim customer when we decided the low cloud that was rolling in really wasn't to be messed with.  :(

I would have quite liked to try it. Only other turbo diesel winch I've experienced was a 200 BHP straight 6 air cooled affair. If you climbed too steeply there was a sudden drop in power and a worrying few seconds of decaying airspeed before the turbo spooled up and you were climbing again. ;D

I suspect I might not have had that problem with this monster.

It's off to an airfield in Spain after testing, IIRC.

Hmm. Got launched by Denzil power today and let's just say the mapping of the autobox ECU isn't ideal for that application. Straight up to 80 knots with incredible acceleration (60 would have been just right), then back to 60 as the autobox tries to hold on to a high gear too long. Pregnant pause with no power while it drops off the bottom of the turbo boost, then back up to 80 knots as it changes down and the boost builds again. ;D

Check piston heads web site, seem to start at 19k, some with far less miles iirc
