Title: Succesful Day :)
Post by: Broomies Mate on 28 August 2010, 21:59:51
Yesterday, the car started to run on 5 cylinders, very lumpy and massive smell from one of the CAT's.

Today, I replaced the plugs, hoping it was a dodgy plug.  At the same time, I took the plenum off, cleaned the throttle bodies, inside of the plenum and the breathers.  To be fair, the breathers were very clear anyway, but as it was in pieces, I gave it the full treatment.

3 cans of Carb Cleaner, and a lot of rag later, everything shiny like new.  Re-assembled everything and fired her up.  Still running on 5. :(

A few phone calls later, and a new DIS-Pack is looking like it's going to be £135+VAT, but I'll have to wait until Monday to get one.

One final call to a good chap in Bristol (Gary, Kingswood Cavaliers) and he has genuine DIS-Packs on the shelf, £100 cash  ;)

I tell him which one I need (model number ends in 107 I think) and head up to collect.

Nice shiny new DIS-Pack in hand, I drive home in a horrible Peugeot 106, and get to removing everything again.

This time, removed the Wipers and Scuttle panel for easier access to the DIS.

Managed to remove it in under an hour, some shouting and screaming, but hey-ho.  New DIS fitted, re-assembled everything, and fired up..... PERFECT.

New Plugs and clean Throttle Bodies have made a noticeable difference to performance.  Just seems to pick up and go like it should, no hesitation, no flat spots.  Awesome.

A quick pic of the Old and New DIS;

It's not the nicest of jobs, but for anyone who needs to tackle this job, be sure that it isn't so bad as it seems.  :y

Commiserations on having to drive a Peugeot, did the car survive your best efforts to kill it?

LOL!  It's a 1998 R plate 1100 jobbie.  If you close your eyes and just listen, it sounds really fast.  Reality kicks in when you open your eyes again, and see the little old lady from number 12 overtaking you with her zimmer frame.

To be fair, it got me clean out of the crap today...... And, it only takes 15pence to fill it up, and it'll do 14,070 miles to a tank.

I still hate the stupid toybox sized piece of sh1te though.

That's a good story with a happy ending! i wish my day went so well, still it'll be done by tomorrows end! I saw my cheeky DIS pack staring at me today when I was working on the beast. Im tempted to change it as a preventative measure while it's all in bits, I wonder if this is a good idea or not?

Fortunately, they rarely fail unless they are water damaged, and when they are water damaged, you can clearly see (from my pic and that in the Maintenance Guide) that they dont look too healthy.  If yours looks in good order, I'd suggest to leave it be.  If it looks anything like mine, change it ASAP.  In fact, with the exhaust removed, you can drop it out quite nicely.  Pulling it out of the top is a right pain in the knackers.  :y

EDIT:  Congrats for having the kahunas to tackle the Exhaust Manifold Gasket.  Mine is booked in for Thursday to have it replaced.  Couldn't do that job by myself, not without a ramp.  :y
