At last I have found an Omega in reasonable nick and at the right price. It is a 2.6 Elite saloon on a 51 plate. I know some will say this is neither fish nor fowl but it does what I need and is a pleasure to drive, being noticeably quieter than any of the 2.5s and 3.0s I have tried.
There are a few little things to sort out but almost everything seems to work. Knowing it was a 2.6 of a certain age I was checked for smoke on a cold start and on revving, but there was none. The tail pipe also looked a healthy colour, although the oil level was at the lower end of normal. So imagine the words I said when, fifty miles down the road, the “check oil level” warning popped on. This was doubly unfortunate because I was wearing clean underwear at the time. Anyway, cursing myself for buying a lemon, I shoved in a bit over half a litre of oil to bring it up to full and drove on.
Since then, I have done well over a thousand miles, mostly having a laugh hurling it around the Lake District, and it hasn’t used a drop of oil as far as I can see. And that includes a good few miles up ridiculous gradients on twisty, gravelly roads with the TC light flashing as if Christmas has come early. So, fingers crossed, perhaps it was just under-filled in the first place.
Anyway, you will probably be seeing a few posts from me as I iron out a few little niggles. Wish me luck!

By the way, do you know when the cambelt and tensioners were last changed ?. It should be every 40K miles, else you may suffer a broken belt, or it will jump teeth, which makes a mess of the valves and guides. :'( :'( :'(

Cheers Ken - yes, Dropped a cambelt on a Rover 820Si many years ago and it took long enough to fix that even with only 16 valves. The only good thing about it was watching the bloke from the AA recover it. It was on the top storey of a multi-storey car park and he decided to coast down the spiral ramps with no servo on the brakes! Took fifteen minutes before he stopped shaking and got some colour in his face. ;D
The Omega has every service stamped up on time by the same small local garage but, strangely, toothed belt has never been ticked. So I phoned the garage and they obviously remembered the car, reeling off all the work they had done including cam belt and tensionner at 40K and 80K. The other work they mentioned does check out so I am reasonably confident I won't need another cam belt until 120K, touch wood. :y

With your initial oil problem, I would certainly consider a full oil and filter change (best done every 3k miles anyway) and the breathers given a complete clean. ;) ;)

If i were you and finances permitting of course, i would replace the belt anyway,better safe than sorry... i know the garage said it was done but i always look at cambelts as being a lot cheaper to replace than a mangled engine

I guess your'e right - I would feel more comfortable knowing it had been done. Not sure I will have time, perhaps that is one for one of the OOF specialists.
