I've just returned home with a repaired Westfield chassis. New front end and can barely see the join. If that's still the case after It's taken its' first hump backed bridge I'll be a happy man. :y

So, the disassembly now gives way to reassembly. Watch this space.

Excellent.
Can I borrow that trailer at some point?! ::)

Looks like all your missing now Kevin is 7 huskies, mush ;D

Excellent news Kev, any other improvements while it's apart? V8 perhaps? :o

At least there's plenty of room to work on it ... :)

Good news Kevin :y

Books only open for V6's that TB has driven :y

I'll book some more weekday meetings at MoD then ;)

So is it getting the original power plant back or something more interesting..........
-
Even a v6 with a flat delivery curve would go well. And a compact 54degree one would probably fit easily.
As Kevin Wood's is the wide chassis, guessing a proper v8 would fit, though I can see traction being a challenge ;D ;D

Sounds like a plan. :y

I think it'll be put back together pretty much as it was for now. I have an appointment with some very nice roads in Scotland in September which I don't want to miss.
However, I might take to task upgrading it during the winter. Beats driving it on ice again. :-X

Yep. Toured with one with an X30XE fitted last year. Very tidy and plenty of room. I must dig out the photos I took of it.

Basically yes. New bonnet with a bulge required. I think the V8 had a top mounted pedal box whereas mine's bottom mounted but I think that was done to fit the Zetec in reasonably far back so V8 would probably work with my configuration. think there was a little more bracing round the diff on the V8 chassis. Other than that, it's the same.
V8 westies are quite traction-limited, in all gears, to the point where you need to be very careful and can't ever let red mist take over, which is a shame, IHMO. Some swear by them, I'm not sure it's the way to go. They feel notably more lardy with the advantage that you don't need to change gear any more. :-/
They are fitting the Z16LER engine to more recent models. Looks a tidy little lump for that much grunt. I wonder how much tuning they will take?
It already has quite a quick natasp 4 pot in it so to be worth hacking it about it needs to be a radical change, either to forced induction, more cylinders, much reduced weight or several of the above, IMHO.
.. but back on the road would be a vast improvement over the status quo. ;)

I too look forward to seeing your pictures Kevin :y
I still cant get over how light the car was (when the engine was in ::)) I have a nice 3.0 here waiting for a similar project :D

Should have seen me unload it from the trailer single-handedly with no front wheels yesterday. Thought I was going to be flattened when the back wheels set off down the rams but no. Pulled it off the trailer, pushed it up the drive and into the garage. As 2woody commented, just a large wheelbarrow. ;D

Go for it. Get a cheap 2nd hand one with a cr@ppy old Ford crossflow or similar and give it a bit of a transformation.

That would obviously require tins of paint of the shade known in the trade as dog's c**k pink.

Thanks to Chrisgixer for helping yesterday :y, and apologies for running out of pop rivets before the job was done. :-[
Will try to get some more pictures up soon.
Repair sections of chassis blown over with a couple of coats from a rattle can.
Most of the ali. panels now back on. 2 Floor panels pending a delivery of 4mm pop rivets to finish the job
Pedals and master cylinder fitted.
Engine bay brake lines and wiring loom routed and secured.
Steering column and rack fitted.
Front suspension and brakes assembled.
Front mudguard brackets sprayed ready to fit.

It's a 2 Litre F**d Zetec with a ported head & fast road cams on Jenvey throttle bodies. Some pictures of it to follow as I've been changing the cam belt and timing up the cams last night.

[movedhere] Omega Gallery [move by] Kevin Wood after another admin pointed out that it is, after all, an Omega gallery. :-[
I will try to keep this updated with progress as the rebuild continues, and try to take pictures wherever possible, although it's not always easy to remember when pressing on with the work.

C20let or Z20let lumps are quite light and are force fed air fairly easy to tune too i might add

Here's the chassis after being wheeled back into the garage and set up at a comfortable working height.

My long-suffering workmate comes in handy again. :y
(http://images.omegaowners.com/images/kevin/Westfield%20Rebuild/IMGP2963.JPG)
Forward of the bulkhead the chassis is bare - and nice and new. 8-) Side panels have been loosened and floor panels removed to allow them to fit the chassis into the jigs.
After Chris and I worked on it on Sunday. Side panels back on. Steering rack and front suspension loosely mounted.
Master cylinder, wiring loom and brake lines in. What? Were you expecting to see a brake servo? :o
(http://images.omegaowners.com/images/kevin/Westfield%20Rebuild/IMGP2966.JPG)
Steering column and pedals in (viewed from below).

The engine was due a cam belt change before it so inconsiderately punted me off the road and up a grass bank, so makes sense to do it while it's out. Cam cover off, and it's looking nice and clean for 48k in this car and 84k in a previous life.
(Avert your eyes now) Crankshaft locking tool.
Now, the cams on this engine are modified, which means they are ground from OEM cams or OEM blank castings. The alignment grooves cast into the cams are rendered inaccurate when they are reground with a different profile and, in any case, the clearances are much tighter due to the more aggressive profile, so accurate cam timing is vital. To that end, we must time the cams the hard way.
Firstly, we mount a protractor on the crank to measure the crank angle.
Then we use a DTI on number 1 piston to find the true top dead centre of the engine.
.. and align the protractor with a datum at TDC.
Then we use the DTI on the cam follower of one of no.1's valves to measure where (in this case) the valve is fully open, and read the angle from the protractor.
I tend to find the reading at maximum valve lift and then turn the engine clockwise through the cycle, taking a reading a few 100ths of a millimetre before and after the lift has peaked. Then calculate the mid point between the two angles and this should give an accurate indication of the cam timing. In this case we're looking for the intake valve to be fully open 110 degrees after TDC and the exhaust valve 114 degrees before TDC.
The cam pulleys have a vernier adjustment (scale just visible in the lower left) to allow small adjustments to easily be made.
It's a bit of a faff, but essential to get the best out of the cams.

Interesting stuff Kev. :y

Double checked the cam timing and put the covers back on the engine after a bit of degreasing last night, then wondered what to do next. Bemoaned the fact that the rivets hadn't arrived, otherwise I'd have fitted the floor panels.
This morning, what did I nearly trip over on the way out of the front door? A bag of rivets. Didn't notice them on the way in last night. ::)

Nice progress Kevin.
You really need (assuming you have a compressor, which for a man of your technical abilities, I assume you do).... so yeah.... you really need an Air Powered Rivet Gun.
Would have saved an hour at least for those panels alone, and cramp in the hands *says nothing*.

Yes, I agree, but I've gone and finished them now, so no excuse. ::) ;D

Perhaps I'm just a lazy so-and-so, but highly repetitive tasks, live riveting, really annoy me. Also, the pain in the hands and lower arms is terrible using the grip type riveter. I dont have a compressor at home, so I use a scissor type compression riveter, which is quicker, and stops your hand from seizing up.
Thank god for the workshop, eh? ;D ;D ;D

You do end up with a nice firm handshake after a couple of hundred pop rivets with the grip riveter. The scissor type are of course much better until you catch your finger in them. :o
I also find I'm often offering up a rivet with a P clip under it or similar, and it's then easier with the grip riveter to hold everything in place.
It's funny, some repetitive tasks are torture, and others I find quite therapeutic.
Kevin

know what you mean - I've spent the greater part of the week making hay - in a John Deere cutting grass
very repetetive but therapeutic.

Still following this with much interest. 8-) :y :y

Bit more progress....
Fuel tank is back in...
Breather pipe run up as high as possible...
Low pressure fuel pump and return line..
Now, the fuel system is a bit odd thanks to the car having been converted from carbs to fuel injection. On carbs you have a float chamber full of fuel so the odd interruption of supply from the tank as the fuel sloshes around is not too much of a problem.
With fuel injection, if the pump sucks air, the engine stops delivering power almost instantly.
The tank is wide and shallow, and whilst you can add a "sump" to the bottom of the tank for fuel injection, the Westfield solution still gives problems so I decided to leave the tank be and add a surge pot.
Before this can be mounted we need some mountings for it so we'll use a couple of these - rivnuts...
Really useful fasteners for "blind" situations, IMHO. Screw them onto the mandrel...
Push into the hole and squeeze...
And you have a nice threaded hole to mount something..
In this case the fuel surge pot and high pressure fuel pump...
Also refilled the braking system and bled it. Pedal is firm (ish).
Coming along gradually. Almost ready to drop the body back on.
Kevin
-
Thats beginning to look like its nearly a runner :y
-
Well, got the body out of temporary storage (hanging from the garage roof) tonight.

Gave it a quick jetwash to remove the 10 years of accumulated crud where it can't be reached and, with the help of an assistant...
It's back on the chassis.
Back end is fixed in place.
Front end needs alignment with the bonnet, scuttle and nosecone (which needs a repair) first.

Sorry for the lack of updates recently. Came across a small(!) issue when fitting the bodywork:
..in that the chassis wasn't quite the right shape, so, unfortunately, it had to go back to Westfield. >:(
So, another trip up the M40 on a trailer behind the MV6..
A major pain the the @rse but they threw a lot of manpower at stripping it, rectifying the issue and rebuilding it to where I had got it within a day so whilst the mistake could have been avoided by a bit more attention to detail I can't fault their response.
In the meanwhile, a few more jobs to tackle. Tidy up some of the wiring under the scuttle:
The wiper motor had been a bit reluctant to park the wipers properly and part of the parking switch fell apart when I dismantled it..
Suddenly, all is clear...

Lucas. ::) Prince of darkness.

Switch = couple of bent bits of copper, bathed in grease. >:(
(http://images.omegaowners.com/images/kevin/Westfield%20Rebuild/IMGP3016.JPG)
All cleaned up and glued back together, only for me to find replacement switches on Ebay for a tenner. Oh, well, I have a spare now.
On to the nosecone, and the main problem is that the mounting flange on one side has broken.
Here's the good side:
.. and the repair... :-[
(http://images.omegaowners.com/images/kevin/Westfield%20Rebuild/IMGP3028.JPG)
A couple of layers of glass fibre and it'll be structurally OK. There's a bit of crazing in the gel coat on the nosecone. I might well be replacing it so for now a structural rather then cosmetic repair will do.
Also glassed over a few other areas where the GRP looked to have been stressed to get the strength back.
Decided this bit of bellhousing at the bottom served only as a speed hump detector , so out with the grinder. ::)
Thoughts turn to eventually getting the engine back in, so put the clutch back on, with new driven plate.

So.. time to re-unite, methinks...

Lol, it always made me chuckle when I visitied Westfield.
They claim that the chassis's are all precision and impossible for others to make etc and yet when you saw them doing it I always thought 'what a joke'
You have now seen the issue first hand! ;D ;D
Just a point, the black goo (as in cam cover stuff) is a BAD idea for that joint....you want oil cooler cover goo

The sales guys do talk some rubbish about their chassis construction.. ;D
However, in my experience, you won't find other kit / low volume manufacturers doing much different. Having been involved in a few kit car builds Westfield is the only one that hasn't needed hacking-about just to get things to fit in the first place.
And yes, agreed. Oil cooler sealant would have been better if it'd been to hand.

I am more worried than that, having seen oil cooler plates which have been fitted using cam cover goo and they start leaking within weeks, I suspect it wont hold.

It may be late but I have some spare grey stuff here

I might grab a blob of if off you next time our paths cross, if that's OK?
Unlike the oil cooler, at least this is easy to inspect / get to.

Well looks like the welding will be finished by the end of the weekend so I should be able to return your kit next week so I could bring it then. No pub lunch this time as I'll be in full garb and not allowed in pubs :(

what gearbox do you use?
(looks like an upside down transit box)

(looks like an upside down transit box)
It's a Ford MT75, which did indeed get used in the Transit for a while.
Up sides:
Reasonably light as it has an aluminium casing and bell housing.
Handles plenty of power reliably
Nice, crisp feel to the shift once you've taken out all the spongy bits in the mechanism
Down sides:
Nobody makes sensible priced alternative gearkits for it
First gear is great for towing pikey wagons, not launching light sports cars
;)

Kevin, started mine again, spent 5 weeks at the powdercoaters, (had to wait that long as it was free)

Excellent.. :y I can tell this rebuild will leave me pining for another project. ::)
That also reminds me.. I have one of those subframes rotting away in the back garden. ;D
Time to get out into the garage, I think. I'm expecting it to be running by the end of the day.

Best of luck Kev, and good job Martin :y

Oil cooler and remote filer, horns and a bit of plumbing added.
Nosecone including radiator mounted.
.. and on to the interior.
Transmission tunnel panel replaced
(http://images.omegaowners.com/images/kevin/Westfield%20Rebuild/IMGP3057.JPG)
Hmm. Just got to reunite this wiring with the dashboard...
Job done, and all working. :y Mental note to clean windscreen before driving. ::)
Rear calipers had to come off for bleeding to get a decent pedal due to some trapped air.
Interior fitted.

..and there we have it. Should be in an MOT'able state.
Engine fired up after cranking with no plugs for oil pressure. Purred like a kitten. Actually, I lie. It rattled so badly I wondered if I'd dropped a b0ll0ck with the cam timing but once the lifters had filled, it runs sweetly.
It's mechanically back together and just needs MOT and tax. Cosmetically needs a good clean and polishing out of some battle scars but, ugly or not, at least it's looking likely to be touring Scotland the week after next. :y
Kevin

Well done Kev, been a busy boy. :y
-
Great work Kevin, looking forward to seeing it outside after a wash and polish. :y :y

MOT booked for Wednesday morning. 1st of the month, conveniently, so, all being well, it'll be taxed and on the road on Wednesday. Couple of days commuting as a shakedown then Newent, Glasgow, Aviemore, an undisclosed location on the West coast of Scotland, possibly a visit to John o' groats, Kenmore, Harrogate and back home.
Let's hope for some better weather. ;D

How did you get on with geometry set up?

We love Kenmore :y :y We get there at least twice a year. next time we are up for New Year, they have a fabulous firework display in the village square, followed by a moderate amount of drinking ::) ::)
-
Well, I'm happy to say that it's now back together, MOT'ed, taxed and it has brought me 20 miles to the office without incident. :D
Couple of niggles. Judging by the handling it needs a slightly better suspension geometry setup than I was able to do with bits of string and spirit levels ::) and the clutch pedal stop needs adjustment as it's dragging a little. Other than that, it's well and truly back on the road. 8-)

Nice one Kevin, and great work on the rebuild, thourogh;y enjoyed the pics and the thread you wrote. :y :y

Nice! Fancy lending it to me for a couple of days.. ::) ;D ;D

Top Job Kevin :y
BTW, the 'undisclosed destination' on the West Coast of Scotland wouldn't be Loch Ewe would it? Every time I was sent on a course North of the Border to an 'Undisclosed' Establishment, I ended up there! ;D :y
-
Nice! Fancy lending it to me for a couple of days.. ::) ;D ;D
That would be completely unfair, because when you back in the Omega it would feel like it was going backwards all the time. :y :D :D

I really have to stop reading this thread.. every time I come here it makes me want to go and start building a Dax 427.

All good news Kevin Wood :y
See you at Newent. Remember, any bits you don't want to take to Scotland, I can bring back for you :)
