On my way home someone coming the other way decided to flash me :-?, 'don't know who they are' I thought to myself, fifty yards later i got flashed again :-? :-?, 'Hmmmn Whats wrong here then' was my next thought. Another fifty yards, yep, flashed again :-? :-? :-?, now i know there's something wrong, so i start flapping, slow down whilst looking round at all four corners of the car. Can't see any smoke or fires and it feels like i've still got all for wheels attached so i prepare to stop and investigate some more, when suddenly i notice what all the fuss was about!! Parked neatly on the other side of the road was a little white van , yep a mobile speed camera. So whats my problem then? It's this, I remember when if there was a patrol car parked up or you were heading towards a speed trap you used to get a thumbs down from oncoming traffic, so why doesn't this happen anymore? :-/ Don't get me wrong, i was quite happy that one person flashed me at all :), let alone three :) :), but it might have stopped me jumping round the car as if i had a wasp buzzing an inch from the end of my nose. Does anybody still do this ????

I cant say I have flashed anyone but I have had a few flash me before. :)
-
I warn oncoming traffic approaching 'accident blackspots' whenever possible!!
-
i always let people know of 'dangers' ahead like parked vans... usually get a hand up to say thanks...
-
I gotta say I do flash......
... my headlamps at oncomming traffic to warn them of the impending Camera Van.
I get mixed responces, some say thanks, one guy swore at me and then got flashed by a new GATSO, and some people just look confused.... :o
Cheers.

From the other side of the fence, so to speak, can be amusing watching folks walking round there car, popping the bonnet, kicking tyres and the like...
Then looking across the road and then the look on their face as penny drops.... :)

Can imagine you've seen that a few times, five seconds later i would have been doing the same thing :-?

I watched a programme on the telly(speed cops or something) where the had a police motorcyclist on hand to chase the flashers down and give them a bollicking ;)

Thats a bit OTT, yes my finger slipped officer.
My experaince, 80% of cars that past a van flash me, people don't do it for the fixed cameras anymore only the vans.
Few months ago there was a speedo van up on our by-pass, its flat and straight and so easy to do 65 in stead of 60... had loooads of people flash me for that, and i returned the favour...

I must admit about a month ago I was heading back towards my home town from Stevenage (work) when coming off the bypass 70 into a 60 down to a 40 as I went into the 40 I was confronted with people flashing and it was only when I got further up the road there was a white van parked smack bang in the middle of the road on the island with two camera pointing out the rear, fortunately for me I was only doing 35 as the cars in front had slowed down.
If I had been coming the other way I would have flashed a few people to warn them.

There was a very recent case at the Court of Appeal involving a rather helpful and community spirited fellow who took to putting up warning signs of speed traps when they where in the vicinity of his home. He had originally been charged with the offence of Obstructing Police as a result of this and was duly convicted at his local Magistrates Court. However he appealed first to the Crown Court (Refused) then finally up to the Court of Appeal in London. At the Court of Appeal the bench of very senior High Court Judges quite reasonably asked of the Crown Prosecution Service "What is the difference between an individual putting up warning signs of a speed trap ahead and the Local Authority placing their familiar Camera warning logo signs. The Lawyer from the Crown Prosecution Service had no credible answer to this other then total waffle and his conviction was duly quashed. As their Lordships pointed out the effect of both private and Local Authority warnings was for drivers to slow down. Result now in case law is that individuals warning of speed traps do not commit the Offence of Obstructing Police.

Slightly off-topic, I always drive with my headlights on (day or night), and often get flashed by helpful passing motorists who never heard of this and think I left my light on by mistake…

I always use my sidelights and get the same response quite regularly.

I always drive with my front and rear fog-lights on.
I think it helps me to see where I'm going in the rain.
Funny. I get a lot of flashes too.

Isn't that the correct lane when travelling at 55mph?

You got it, and don't forget you need your mobile stuck to you ear for good measure ;)

Also when you turn off and go though some nice country villages, remember to stick at 55mph! ;) ;D

The lights should make me more noticeable, more so in winter but also in bright days. It’s the motoring equivalent of biker’s wearing hi-viz jackets. Well short of having your car with the full Battenburg kit…
