A work colleague has a 1.8 Meriva - full irmscher kit, lovely little car, but it has become problematic over the last couple of days.Sometimes it starts ,sometimes it doesnt. Today the speedo stopped working, ABS/TC lights flashing on the dash etc. This suggested to me ABS ECU, but that wouldnt affect wether or not it starts ?
It has sat outside work for the last hour - turns over but wont start. RAC man has just turned up and got it started immediately, he did the same thing this morning - peculiar ?? :-/
-
Loose immobiliser chip? As a wild stab in the dark!
Or, of course, the dreaded Cam/crank sensors ;) ;)
-
RAC man has turned up twice and started it immediately - apparently he doesnt really know why. ::) ::)
He thinks it may have something to do with the "body control unit" which apparently lives behind the dash ???? which may have a loose connection which is causing the speedo not to work and the engine to start or not intermittently ??? :-/ :-/
The car is now currently being driven but the speedo isnt working.
Owner tried a different key, and it made no difference.

Needs the codes reading, not any real common issues with these
-
Thanks Mark. Does it require a visit to VX for a chat with Tech2, or is there a lesser type device that can do the job ? :-/
-
Any of the cheap OBD2 readers can read the engine codes off it for him :y
-
cheers Lee, will pass that on. :y

Some of the cheaper units don't talk to a.b.s. e.c.u.'s.
-
Cant see it being abs given the non starting. Dependent on year, the pedal test should work
-
He has tried the pedal trick - didnt work - car is 53 plate, so presumably too new ?
He is a test engineer here and is fairly clued up about electrickery and his built his own diagnostic device which gives codes and a certain amount of live data. He read the codes this morning and got p1615, u217,u2108. :-/
The car started and ran normally this morning, wouldnt start at lunchtime and wouldnt start at 5pm this evening.
Intermittent faults, arent they great fun. ::)
-
Codes come back as:-
P1615 ECM (engine control unit) Identification failed Immobilizer B-006
U2107 CAN bus no communication with CIM (Steering Column module) C-003
U2107 CAN bus no communication with IPC (instrument) C-003
U2108 CAN bus, no communication with ABS (anti-) C-003
U2108 CAN bus no communication with ABS / TC C-003
U2108 programmers / Replace control unit (SG) hardware and software B-003
That all points towards the immobiliser block on the steering column/barrel.
-
Thanks Lee, that sounds entirely feasible to me. :y
He is now going out to the car to have a look (wiggle the wires etc.) will report back. :y
-
He went out, put the key in and it started first time. ::)
Starting to get dark now so he is going to investigate tomorrow morning. :y
-
Its more than that, its pointing at a general can bus failure.
I have seen one where a corruption causeed the can to need a full reconfigure
-
Sorry Mark, youve lost me. :-[ :D.........I assume we arent talking about a tin can or an old double decker :-/ ;D.........any idea how he can find out and if it is that, how to fix it?? :y
-
Bit of an update, just in case its of use to anyone in the future.
The chap removed the relevant electronic components on the steering column, behind the instrument panel, and the body control unit ??, inspected for faults/ damage to circuits etc (nothing obvious) cleaned and reassembled everything - including connectors. Car started and has been running trouble free for approx 10 days now.Still not exactly sure why though. :-/

tell colleague to dump the meriva and get an omega :y :y :y
