Title: Tyre puncture repair
Post by: Delete_this_after on 24 September 2010, 08:02:09
Noticed a screw in one of the rear tyres of the van the day I got it, pain as the tyres have only been on there a few hundred miles. Where is the best place to get the puncture repaired?

I just use the nearest tyre place (that I can trust not to try and sell me 4 new tyres, so not kwik-fitup)

I trusted independent.

I had one repaired at a trusted independent around 3 weeks ago, cost 16 pounds, I had another done at Central tyres around 9 months ago, 35 quid!

I think £16 is expensive let alone £35  :o Could possibly go to kwik fit up and supervise them as I don't trust them with anything, they can't really try a flog me new tyres, all are recently on :y

See I would wait until next week, when I get the lowering springs fitted, as it'll be having a 4 wheel alignment then too, but it keeps going down now  :-/

I paid £14.95 yesterday for a rear on the Rover.

They wouldn't do the front puncture though, claiming the tyres were already illegal. Measured tyre depth when I got home, 3mm all over.

Tyreweb on Orbital Park Del.  They have two units, one next to McDonalds and here:

 :y :y

They are first class and have used them for around 8 years now.  They will repair if legal to do so, which means the hole needs to be a certain distance away from the shoulder of the tyre.  They do a good repair ;) ;)

As long as its not in the side wall of the tyre they should be able to fix it.

We're fortunate in this area, there is a specialist hidden up a farm cart track who can repair them even on the shoulder. He's done two for me in the past, and both saved me a new tyre. Interestingly, I was put on to him by a friendly independent tyre shed.

He may be able to repair them on the shoulder, but I understand that is illegal, and that is for a reason ;) ;)

I'm not sure that you are correct Lizzie, the repair is quite technical, I believe it involves some sort of vulcanisation, but I may be guessing, certainly the repair internally looks completely different to normal puncture repairs. He assures me that it is perfectly legal, and has been doing it for years, so must be known to local police.

The rules are based (I am reliably informed) around the need to ensure the repair is a minimum distance from the edge of the steel banding....hence why you cant repair near the shoulder and underwrite it as safe  :y

This is covered by British Standard BSAU 159f (which MUST be met in the UK).

You can get a guide for the allowed area here:

To my knowledge, and with the ones I have had done over the years, it is always an internal repair with a plug being pulled through the hole from the inside.

The regulations for repair are:
"Have a Flat Tyre? Is It Fixable?

The “repairable area” of a tyre is designated as that where a repair can be carried out to British Standards (currently BS AU 159f).

Because a tyre curves away from the middle of where the tyre rolls on the road, only the centre area is repairable. Sidewalls are not repairable.

The repairable area is defined as a percentage of the tyre’s “nominal” section width and thus varies by the size of the tyre. The repairable area is based on the centre line, eg. 82mm means 41mm on either side of the centre line of the tyre."

 ;) ;)

EDIT: Marks DTM beat me to it!! ;D ;D ;D ;)

Looking at that information, and bearing in mind that the last repair of this type I had was about two years ago, I suspect that the normal tyre fitters just look at it, and say they can't do it, but I think both of my repairs of this type would have still been legal, just close to the edge.

If they were within the prescribed area then they will be fine  :y

All the repairs should use a vulcanising compound to esnure proper bonding and sealing of the repair
