Title: This is why Oil Changes are Important!
Post by: Darth Loo-knee on 08 September 2010, 19:12:45
I don't know if you can see the state of the oil from the pictures but it is like Treacle, staying stuck to the insides instead of dripping out :o

You would not guess what mileage the car has done!

Is it the 2.6 you mentioned Daz?
At a guess, you would think it had done circa 120,000 miles on a fairly poor service schedule. How many miles has it actually done? When my sump came off, it actually looked lovely and clean compared to that...I was rather suprised. After 500 miles or so the oil is just starting to turn dark in mine, so I'll change it. I wonder how long the oil had been in this poor 2.6?

Used that on Windows Mobile until YaBB became compatible with Pocket IE. Tried it on the crApple.

It works (mostly), but a bit 'unique' as you say...

I think I know this engine!! believe it was a one elderly owner car and had a decent service history, looking at that that I'm guessing the garage has been blagging it or has been using the cheapest, nastiest oil known to man.

How's the rebuild going Daz ?

every engine i have seen with shels like that has needed the crank reground except one!! and that was a 73k 2.6 straight six
carlton diplomat, i spent ages polishing the crank journals and it ran sweet as a nut to say i was amazed was a understatement, but last time i saw the guy it had 122k on the clock but he was religious on his oil changes after seeing the damage it had done, his words when he asked me to fix it? it sounds like a diesel!!! :y

Well this car has 58572 miles on the clock so was hoping that doing the Big End Bearing would solve the problem, before changing the Bottom End.
Everything was put back together and the car ticked over perfectly, infact you would think it a new engine... until I drove it up the road when at 3000rpm a knockin started  :( so back home.. revving the car up the knock went at around 5000 rpm nice and quiet again...

Anyway it obviously wasn't going to go away but thought it may have been worth a try as there was nothing to lose really. The owner of the car just wanted me to change the bottom end so yesterday I removed the Donor Engine & Gearbox from the car it belonged to. Stripped it all down the the Block, then cleaned it up so it looks like new ready for refitting parts. I then removed the Engine & Gearbox from the Knocking Car ;D and called it a day.

So today,, was strip down knocking engine, heads off clean them as you aint seen nothing like them (photo below) I had to fill the plug well with Carb Cleaner to enable me to suck the Gluppy Oil Out.... removed all the parts from this engine and swap over to the other block. Fiited new Head Gaskets, Spark Plugs, Cam Cover Gaskets, secondhand Coil Pack I had etc etc ....then removed both gearboxes and fitted the 58000 miler gearbox to my Good Block.

It is now ready to fit into the car after I have given the engine bay a good clean on Thursday.
A few pictures for you to see what you think.......

Just an update for anyone who is interested..

I fitted the engine and gearbox today, plus everything else....

She burst into live at the first turn of the key :y
I held the revs at 2000rpm for about 45 minutes to burn off carb cleaner/oily handmarks etc. No leaks so really pleased. Going to drive the car myself for a couple of days to check everything is fine before going back to a Happy Owner, who I am sure will keep it serviced regular from now on :y

Nice one Daz! :y Just changed the oil in my 2.2, last done 5 months & only 3000 miles ago but still like black treacle :o That's what short runs & a cool engine do for it in my case! Should be an improvement now i'm running almost exclusively on LPG, but i'm still gonna change it no later than every 3 months from now on. :y

Hi All.
Just want to thank Daz for all his hard work and own up - the car is mine  :-[
The problems encountered are on another posting "Oil light - is it terminal?".
Just goes to show - unless you've got absolute proof, don't believe it when the seller tells you "it's just had a full service".
I've driven about 10K in this after buying it, but it didn't make it to the service.
Happy to report that the journey home from Daz's was uneventful and very quiet. Feels like a new car - which it virtually is. :)
Note to self to check mileage and/or date and change the oil every 5,000miles/6 months as per instructions.
Well done Daz for going "above and beyond" - nothing personal, but I hope I don't see you for a while.  ;) ;)

A guy I worked with bought an ex demo astra, it had a free service from VX,
3 years later we found it had never had another oil change, and that was 70.000 miles later,

he was expecting a light to come on he said ::)
