Title: I got to drive my Elite last night
Post by: TheBoy on 02 October 2010, 10:49:06
...I don't often get chance, as she's always hogging it ;D

Still don't like it though.  After 2 (?) months, its still not growing on me  :'(, looks like I'll keep with the old rust bucket MV6 a bit longer :D

That will be complete in a while (popping in a new cam sensor, then thats everything done on it).

The poor Rover has been neglected since I sold the tractor - as she's out most weekends, the car doesn't get repaired...  ...so thats one good thing about the Elite - she's happy to bomb about in that, allowing me to fix all the niggles that have built up on the Rover.

But you've had years to taylor the mv6 to how you want it....? No?

14/07/2010 at 8.50 PM, but of course that's just a guess  ::)

I do prefer the Elite set up to the MV6, I don't mind a bit of wallowing.

I do remember you saying it's slower than your MV6, and I suppose that coupled with std Elite handling would make it feel pretty awful to drive compared to your MV6.

I know Chris has got MV6 components but kept self levelling...maybe that's a possibility for it? And I suppose an LPG conversion aswell? Telematics and a CID to make it more yours, and a go faster stripe?  :P

Not really - I liked it from day 1.  OK, the niggling understeer problem annoyed me, and has now been resolved.  The drivers door speaker I've tolerated for 7yrs, still can't find the fault.

The jury is still out on which is quickest - the MV6 feels quicker, but testing my MV6 against chrisgixer's 3.2, there is little in it.

Quite clearly, the MV6 does corners, the elite...  ...well, the elite is an elite.

Without doubt, the MV6 slows down better...

CID - you know my views, I'm unsure if I prefer the GID or CID.  I probably will put one in if MDTM can fix the damage I did to my spares when looking at posiibility of working out how to decode them.

Telematics - will only bother if the wiring is in place. Either way, it will get a nokia bluetooth kit.

Suspension - its all got to go if I'm going to use it regularly.

LPG - I really need to make a decision to keep the car or not ;)

Obvious suspension issues aside I think it's all in the mind tbh.....

.....certainly nothing a nice set of springs wouldn't sort out.  ::) :P

If you would consider getting rid of it, we could try and track down a late 3.2 MV6 with a sunroof with lowish miles and see if you prefer that.
There may well be a silver '03' 3.2 MV6 saloon with 58,000 miles coming up soon. Only found out about it this morning. It does have the CCR 2006 and cloth interior, but it does have a sunroof.
I'll happily get it, let you have it for a week to see if you prefer that. MV6's go for less at auction than Elite's, so I would hopefully get it for less than KL was. I'd happily take KL back and sell it and give you the difference between the price we can get for KL and the actual cost price of the 03 MV6.

So what are the problems with it, specifcally?

Performance - should be nothing in it, as you say. That one probably has a little loosening up to do.

Suspension - fair enough. I wouldn't have Elite suspension after owning an MV6.

Stopping - brake setup is the same so it's either not in good order or the suspension issue - see above.

Interior - FFS! that's just there to hold the important bits up (speedo, rev counter, oil pressure light).

Sunroof? gay. ;)

The MV6 seems to come alive at high revs (as if multirams aren't working). Elite is much flatter delivery.

That, and tyres, could be the key to the problems.

Only on this, the wheels may stop, but it takes about 10 years for the sprung weight to stop forward motion....  ;D.  Yes, I reckon the brakes need a good service.

I'm old. I need my creature comforts ;D. The facelift interior is awful though.

In its defence, it cruises really nicely at that 70-80mph speed. Really nicely.

Trouble is, who cruises at a constant 70-80mph.

Its easier to 'downspec' and elite than upspec a MV6.  I suspect that putting suspension on that makes the handling slightly better than the Titanic would transform the car. Possibly even putting decent tyres on it, rather than the awful Michelins it has...

I have just told Mrs TheBoy about the contents of these thread, in particular Kevin Woods thing about sunroofs (after she spookily just called on of the contestants on tonight's trash TV 'bent as a nine bob note' just minutes after I typed it above), and she, worrying, has a message for Kevin Wood...

"Tell him to stop slagging off my car!"

Looks like the decision's made then. ;D

I stand by what I say about sunroofs though. ::)

Nothing I like more than driving a car without a roof but can't see the appeal of driving a saloon with a ruddy great hole in the roof. ;D

Just guarantees one or more of the following, IMHO:

It'll leak when it rains.
You'll forget to close it, and it'll leak when it rains then allright.
It'll whistle when you're driving at xxx MPH (along a "private test track")
The paint will flake off the surround and it'll rust.
Various flora will establish a home in the sealing material.
It'll open when you least expect it and refuse to close (normally when it's raining).
Your bonce will be worn bald by the low headlining.

 ;)

That will be the chip and the porting doing its magic

Indeed - I reckon the porting has helped giving it more at higher revs, though I'm convinced it has taken a little bit away from lower revs.

Would that be right? Why (lower revs bit)? Is it to do with speed of air?

Her exact words were "yes, I think it would be nicer if you stiffened up my Elite"
