Title: 4X4
Post by: Shackeng on 03 October 2010, 19:15:03
After last winter I posted for info on used Range Rovers, I've now had to downgrade my ambitions, and am looking for a good 4X4 up to £2500, maybe a Discovery or Jeep. Any suggestions? TIA :y

Sounds interesting, I know nothing about either, or any of the above. Could you comment on the main differences, apart from price new? :y

Here's an example at the top of your budget...

LPG converted too :y

I'd advise against a 4.0 if buying a Rangie though... Too many problems with liners :y

Thought it was the 4.0 that was worse... I know the blocks are the same but do remember that one was worse than the other ::)

Of course... The best idea would be a 2.5 TD as it's the same lump as in the Omega Tractors ;) ;)

Any Mitsi Delica is good, the early ones had a 2.5TD lump, not fast but reliable and cheap to run (40mpg+) but slow (85mph tops.)

later mk 2 models were 2.8DTI, better power, dearer to run (30+going down to 20+ if driven hard on a hill) but 95mph +.

Large, old buses with great handling, brilliant seating and load carring, cheap on iunsurance, parts on the mk1 come from the pajero/shogun parts bin, mk2's come from the challenger and later shogun, so easy to find. Block off the EGR on both to make it run better, and boost pressure can be tweaked to improve easily.

Had two of them, would have a LWB mk2 in an instant tomorrow.

Avoid SWB mk2 4WD  "road" varient like the plague, identifiable by the fact it is low on the ground with wheel covers not 16" alloys, and the AUTO is the best to have, overdrive is STD and is easily the best drive.
Manual is OK, but is only 5 gears, and for me, the gearing is wrong, the diff ratio is totally too high, pulls like a train, but does 85 at best, the auto will reach the ton, but still has grunt if you select low and keep OD off.
They are all "grey imports", so insurance is slightly dearer than say, a Disco, but its specc'd sooooo much better, usually tinted windows and even 10CD as standard, with aircon and captains chairs. Nearly always with towbar and twin electrics, and bull bars with extra lights on the front.

Highly Recommended for under 2K down to 1k for a higher mileage one. Remember the speedo will be in kms, so one with 100k on it is still low mileage!!

Excellant owners club, similar to OOF, and spares cheap.

Hope this helps you a bit.

Mike.

But be aware with any imported vehicle... The Date Registered is what the DVLA/Government use for emissions based RFL calculations :o :o ::) ::)

I'm a land rover nut but to be honest £2500 will only get you a rust bucket, you could get a good series 3 but the comfort level is not everybodys cup of tea.

Do not buy a Range Rover P38 over complicated electrics with well known air suspension problems, v8 engine in this model also known for its problems, 2.5 diesel excellent as its out of a BMW, but avoid the P38 regardless

Ive been looking at Grand Cherokee jeeps, residule values are poor but you get a lot of motor for your money parts are also cheap.

That'd tempt me if I wasn't spending so much on the house/garden at the moment... The best 4x4 is, IMHO, the Land Cruiser. It's favoured by the Arabs :y

Very little, mate. Excellant vehicle, although if not lpg'd a bit juicy to run. All said, versatile and comfortable.
The only things to really watch are the rear shock absorbers, std ones are weak and weedy, but aftermarket ones transform it.

Good choice!

Have a look at the Ford Explorer - lots have been converted to LPG and loads of cheap spares too.

I have one for towing my jet ski and can't fault it.

Have recently sold one on a P plare, ex police, and got £1k for it. Excellant vehicle, but you MUST keep up regular servicing, and they must have sequential LPG kits, early kits got it the nickname "Ford Exploder" as the plenums are made of plastic, and pre-detonation blows them to bits!!
