Title: new car
Post by: rikki_essex on 03 October 2010, 21:12:07
The time has now come to get rid of the omega and get something a bit easier on the wallet. Im looking at mondeos, vectras, 607, saabs and audi all diesals what one would you go for based on reliability and running cost?

with DIY maintenance, access to trade prices at Vx, and with OOF, Omega's are cheap as chips to run. Vectra no more reliable than Omega, 607, your joking right, its French!

Audi A8 would be my next choice if i had enough funds.

If fuel is the issue, LPG  :y

the thing is im just looking at cars that i dont mind the look of and i dont do a great amount of milage so lpg is not an option for me. The thing is i also just want a change ive had the omega for the best part of five years and i want something a bit newer that can do me for the next five as ive got the option to change it now and soon i wont as baby number 2 will be on the way. Dont get me wrong i think the omega is a great car but i feel i need to change and diesal seems the only practical option. Also the tax and insurance is silly money and i can save alot just by changing the car. I know im talking to the wrong people about selling it but this forum has some very good people with alot of knowledge about cars in general and just looking for some advice.

signum 1.9cdti should do you - bags of room and around 50 mpg on a run.

dual mass flywheel on the 150 bhp 1.9 cdti is the only real (and expensive) weakness - an auto might be the solution. Other issues are springs and EGR valves but no issues on my wife's so far - but we have had 2 flywheels under warranty.

Nearer 60 mpg is what I'm getting on a long run, and over 40mpg easily on shorter journeys.
Lots of things to watch out for on the 1.9CDTi (150) as mentioned in the posts above.
I swapped my TD Omega estate for one and there no where near as comfortable as the Omega, that's what I miss ::)
Still if it's as reliable as the TD estate then  :y but I somehow don't expect it to be  :-/ and I must say I'm missing it  :'(

There was a thread on the smegnum a couple of weeks back, iirc avoid the autos, and also iirc most of the ones for sale on auto trader at the time did all seem to be autos. Personally I have a phobia against any front wheel drive auto.  Would concider a manual though, but only if all the omegas had gone.

Avoid anything French, and most other alternatives seem to be far more expensive, if you want to drive in the manor to which you have become accustomed, or a 4x4 pikey wagon.  :-X

its not really an option the wife has now got to go on the insurance aswell and its would just push the price up even more i would love to keep it but its just head over heart. It would be silly to keep it, when i was a single man there was nothing worng at all but now ive got other things to worry about and they come first. The thing is i will save so much money by just changing the car and it would be stupid not to change it.

the mondeo tdci is the car i keep going back and looking at. Its not much smaller and more or less 50 mpg less tax and insurance so it looks to be alright.

Not long - I have had big Vauxhalls for about 15 years

Jim has had the same Omega since 1996

However they have DMFs, 2/3rd engine Diseasels and DMFs do not mix well

Much as I like the Mondeo to drive the DMF issues have rather put me off them.  SAAB 9-3 is a good call though they are a bit trampy when the going gets wet and the steering is a bit too light for my taste.  Lovely interiors mind, very relaxing place to sit in.

the story is basically an issue of torque on the 150 bhp diesels which the dmf has in the past had trouble to handle. The issue was allegedly resolved when a new type dmf was fitted as replacement. However- we have had 2 in 46000 miles - one at 16000 and one at 43000.

The Vectra C forum (includes Signum)  has a lot of info on this

Is the 130bhp one ok then? Its probably a 2002 or 2003 i would get.

less reported problems but that may be because there are less of the smaller one.

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/VAUXHALL-VECTRA-SIGNUM-DUAL-MASS-FLYWHEEL-1-9-Z19DT-/170521887051?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM

If you are able to do stuff yourself then these things pop up now and then. Would be tempted to stick with 150bhp but try and get some history on car re flywheel 0 if it is proven to have had a replacement then you may be ok.

For the price of Omega's these days you could get a very late one, very cheap, convert it to LPG and you'll have all the comforts your used to and a car thats cheap to run. I can't see anything else suggested of a similar size being all that much cheaper to tax and insure.  :y

If your really trying to save money you need a small diesel, such as a Diesel Fiesta or Peugeot 206 HDI, by no means great cars but this sort of thing is only £35 a year to tax and do about 700 miles on one tank of diesel. :)

Again TDCI Mondeo is what id spend my money on, had a 607 in the past and as cheap as it was the multi coloured dash made by all the warning lights that were constantly on cost me. ;)

lol i wondered what everyone was talking about. So there is no issuse with the mondeo tdci 130bhp dmf? I do want to save money but i still want quite a big car and the tax is about £80 cheaper and insurance is about £300 cheaper and then the fuel cost is alot cheaper aswell.

Just got the call from the finance company and they have accepted my offer so the car should be up for sale in the next week or two after she has had the work she need done (a little bit of paint work, new wing mirror and new radio).

It can be a fault yes, and it can be fun to fix too.  Doesn't really matter what make or model you look at there will be some sort of fault somewhere.
