Just been browsing coparts website and spotted another decent mig toasted due to the powersounder catching fire :o,can't link to it as I'm in work and right clicking is seen as the devils work >:(.
I don't know if it is me or is this becoming more common as migs are getting older and the batteries leak. I would hate to see the late 03/53 3.2 elites going up in smoke.
I personally think it should be advised for newbies to remove/replace them ASAP and maybe there should be a sticky or suchlike? Any thoughts on this?

That's the one I linked to in the first place ;D

ahh theres another one on there too, oppps ;D

I'd love to catch one "in the act" and find out exactly what's going on.
My opinion is, that every Omega which hasn't had the sounder replaced is on borrowed time. They should be replaced as a matter of course.

What exactly causes these fires? (being new to omega)

As the batteries age they leak, similar to the AA batteries in your old toy car that leak. This corrodes the PCB in the powersounder which in turn shorts and combusts.

I went out to get some paperwork from my diesel last night and I could hear the power sounder going off but it was very quiet. I expected it to be burnt out this morning, but its still in one piece ::)

This is the backup battery in the power sounder itself, not the main vehicle battery.
