Title: Poxy White Van Man!!!!!
Post by: Lizzie_Zoom on 19 October 2010, 20:44:07
Today I approach a superstore in Canterbury, and out of the public car park entrance/exit road comes a white van.  I stop as he is right in the middle of the road and I want to let him out................out he comes, but instead of turning around my cars front, as you are meant to in any vehicle, let alone one with a long wheelbase, he turns right against my offside front bumper!!!!!!!!! >:( >:( >:( >:( >:(

Anyway, he stops and I give him hell, telling him he should never be driving a vehicle of that size, and I have driven far larger vehicles than that so I know!  I also point out the numerous dents all down both sides of this ruddy van. We then exchange details.

Well good news will hopefully come out of this story!  The van was actually on hire from a large southern company, and when I phone them for their insurance details and describe what happened, the manager their said I should send him two estimates and they will settle away from insurance.

The fact is that, very luckily, only the corner of the bumber was scuffed, without any bodywork damage.  Also that particular spot on the bumper already had a nasty historical scuff that had been patched up, and I was going to get around to giving it a proper repair!

So, all being well, job done!! :D :D :D :D :D

But damned white van man, typical of the breed; hopefully he has lost his hire deposit!! 8-) 8-) 8-) 8-) 8-) 8-)

Least you'll get your car sorted out Lizzie, it could of been a fail to stop, or not insured.  And the headache of getting it all sorted and a loss of claims on your insurance.  ;)  :y

Last time I hired a van (white as it happens) I attempted to drive into a car park behind a block of flats. There was a square arch type thing (if that makes sense ?) to go through to get from the front of the flats to the back. I didnt take much notice of it, bit it was at least a foot lower than the roof of the van. Took the rather roof clean off the van. The angry little scottish squaddie who lived in the flat concerned was not happy. I had to let the air out of the front tyres to reverse the van  off his home, and then drive the now convertible van back to the bloke I hired it from. He was also less than impressed. :D ;D ;D

do you mean nearside (passenger side) lizzie?  surely if turned right around you cars' front as rightly point out that he should have, then he would scuff your offside if he misjudged it?  tell me if I'm missing something  :-/ anyway good luck with settlement  :y

Good news today!

The van hire company are coming to take my vehicle away on Friday for repair, and are leaving me with a similiar vehicle to use until it comes back.

They do not want me to go through insurance (which suits me!) and have saved me the time and trouble of obtaining estimates! :y :y

So far, what a great company :D :D :D :D ;)

A hire company that doesn't want to go through their insurance company.  Are you sure the van/driver was covered Lizzie, and they're hoping to do a quick fix cheap job on your car to get around the issue ?.  Especially as the initially asked you to get some quotes ??.
Call me sceptical, but something doesn't sound right to me ??.  :-?

Oh yes, all the paperwork was intact for the driver on proper documents.  Don't forget I will have one of their cars, so if I was not happy with the end result........................ ;) ;)

Thanks for your advise and concern GM, and you are right about being careful! :y :y :y

However this is the firm I am dealing with and they are a big concern, and no doubt the car I will have on loan will be one of their own hire cars:
