Title: 2009 Corsa - any good?
Post by: shyboy on 16 October 2010, 10:36:08
Swmbo wants me to buy her a 2009 1.4 auto petrol Corsa 'Design' which looks and drives great.
Anybody know if it's a good idea.
Cheers.

I was in one a few weeks back, as a passenger. It had the easytronic gear box. It is one of the worst cars I've ever been in for ride and comfort.

And the road and wind noise was unbearable

never been a fan of Corsa, seats like rocks, suspension feels like it had rock dust inside shocks and rubbish leg room!

But, I am a lanky 6ft4 git, and like a comfy car for long distance. So all depends what its for?

With GM trade should be cheap to run, should also be quite reliable  :y

all the magazine rave how good they are. used to have one in 2007 and it was ok but underpowered and noisy.

I know this might sound like a contradiction, but I think despite all the new technology on newer cars, they aren't as good as older cars. Not in every way of course.

I had an old 1990 Mazda 323/Familia 4 dr saloon 1.3 auto in Cyprus, it was a battered unloved old thing but it got me all over the island in the upmost comfort without missing a beat for a year, then i left and sold it.

I would have it back over any new town car/supermini thing

Of that age no real issues Bill.

The heater flaps dont break on the later ones but, you need a 1.4 or 1.3 diesel, the 1.2 is just not upto the jo of shifting the modern heavy Corsa about.

The biggest issue is the easytronic, its not as good as an auto sadly.

I would personaly consider an Astra auto.....proper auto box, only slightly larger and a bit more refined.

How does the easytronic box work? I was a passenger in a Mann prime mover, and the gearbox behaved in the same way as the Corsa easytronic, like a manual, but changing the gears itself. How does that work? Thanks

In simple terms, solenoids operating the clutch and gearchange

Thanks for comments, gents.
Andy B. Very cheeky, but true. (Hope you're both well).
Yes! The ride in the back is pretty hard, but for swmbo's purposes and her annual mileage this isn't a real problem. The front seat and steering wheel height and distance adjustment is surprisingly good, in that even I can get comfortable and the 'auto' is good enough for the little lady. She needs a simple auto, electric windows and good power steering to cope with her arthritic hands, and this car seems to tick all those boxes. And to cap it all, she loves it.
Looks like I've run out of reasons not to buy it for her. Damn.  ::)

The new corsa is the same floor pan as the Grand Punto.

That was in exchange for the 1.3 & 1.9 Desiel Engines

I had a new Corsa as a hire car in Spain, diesel though, with a proper manual box.

For what is, in effect, a little shitbox, I quite liked it, although the car seemed an odd design - the Corsa, by nature, is a little car for blasting around town. To me, it seemed too heavy and cumbersome for that, and was much happier on the motorway. It wasn't just the diesel engine (which obviously will be more suited to cruising), there was just something else about it that I couldn't put my finger on.

That said, I would consider one, as it was quite capable of decent runs, and where I live, there isn't much town driving to be done. I must say, the interior build quality seemed far better than that of the Astra-H (not even been in an Astra-J yet). We both liked it.

Though all that said, after our Spanish holiday, we jumped back in her little Rover 25 at Luton airport, and both agreed that it was a better car than the newer Corsa, despite the amount of coolant it was throwing out of the exhaust ;D ;D

And I guess thats why, if we got into a situation where we had to drop to 1 car, the Rover would currently be the one that would stay...

Swmbo's current car is a Rover 25 2.0l turbo diesel which in my humble opinion is an excellent car for her purposes, (it goes like a rocket when the turbo kicks in), but the power steering is too heavy at parking speeds for her arthritic hands and it has manual window winders which she can't manage very well. All in all it has to go, and somebody's going to get a nice little motor if they're not too demanding from the comfort point of view.

imo a small car must be a small car.. a big car must be ......

like the new clit , new corsa is also not small..

which I will prefer the older models for both..

Fords tend to have feather light PAS. Might be worth a look at the Fiestas.

Can't say that the Corsa I had in Spain was any different to the Rover to be honest. Assuming your Rover hasn't got a lazy pump?

Windy windows? Yuk, can't remember last car I had with those - probably my first car (Triumph Acclaim - went like stink (for what it was), but 'interesting' in the corners)

Edit: I forgot, our Nova had windy windows.

The dirty deed's done.
I must say I'm very pleasantly surprised by this version of the car.
It's a true auto., (the dealer says he wouldn't touch Easytronic with a bargepole) and whilst it's never going to compare to a bigger exec type vehicle, it pulls away and drives very well. No wind noise, tons of room and adjustment in the front, (both seats and steering), albeit at the expense of the back seats when fully utilised, and the equipment level in the Design version isn't bad at all. The slighty hard ride isn't that much of a problem.
Swmbo loves it, so now I can concentrate on looking for a decent upgrade for my 2.6 estate.  8-)
Seems a perfectly good option for the 5k miles it's likely to do per annum.
