Title: Timing tools
Post by: venom on 24 October 2010, 18:38:29
I'm looking at getting this set, http://www.ldemporium.co.uk/engine-timing-tool-kit-for-v6-gmsaab-p-1626.html
but it says "1996-2003 3.0L used in Saab 9-5" so would that be OK for a 1997 2.5 ?

Have a look on eBay, I picked up a new unused Sykes kit for £35

Was going to say that price is a bit steep, but then it has the 30mill spanner and torx crank socket which not all kits do, and it is new...

...if you could source that kit on eBay second hand....?

But yes, will do all gm v6's.

Could get away with no crank tool on a 3.2 or a 2.6 with fixed bottom pulley I suppose, but not on a 2.5 or 3.0.

This is how most of the Laser kit comes, brand new kits from tool shops come without the Crankshaft and Camshaft Locking Tools and are sold separately  :( , which is why I did think the Bergen kit seemed quite a good price

I wouldnt buy a laser kit even if it was complete tbh. They are not known for their accuracy in the cam timing dept.
Sykes pickavant seems to be the recommended brand for v6 locking/setting kits.  ;)

If you look on the Sykes pickavant site the kit looks the same as the Laser set  :question

It may look the same but apparently some members have found them to be less than accurate when setting the cam timing. ;)

There was a batch of laser tools a couple of years back that simply didn't fit at all.

Whilst the cheaper tools will do the job I find the cam locking tools have a very sloppy fit which can be a nuisance.

As they are in the box ;) Red to the 135 and green to the 246. Fit the crank lock first, check the cam timing marks and they'll only fit one side if the cams are in the correct place :y
