What do you think of the Tigra 1.6.
I have just been offered a 1999 for peanuts for my partner. Engine sounds sweet and don't look in bad condition but was wondering what to look out far!
-
Honest opinion, I don't know anything about them, but if it's cheap and in good nick, and you need it, who cares what people think!
-
I never liked them personally and especially after test driving one. I was very underwhelmed!! ;)

It's a Corsa in pretty clothes IIRC, so that's not surprising ;)
On the up side, it's a Corsa in pretty clothes so one imagines it would be mechanically decent (ISTR they had a spate of engine problems at some point in their production run though?)
-
all colors ok except yellow..
-
Well the rear spoiler needs to go and the 17s it's on appear a little bit too big but when I tried it out it still goes like hell for it's age. The engine sounds great and body is tidy for it's age so I thinks it's worth what they want. It's almost like driving a go cart lol

Read this Parkers Review. It re-inforces what I felt about the car after driving it:

;)

Great fun and reliable, pretty cheap to and quite well screwed together.
And they handle better than the sporty Corsas.

Lizzie, that is a TOTALY different car to a 1999 Tigra

Right Mark, well that was even worse! :D :D ;) ;)

Seem ok Imo, far far too small for me, I have to stick me head out the sunroof just to drive it, bit of torque steer when you boot it, but tidy little car for a lady, go for it. :y
-
I like the tigra. still look quite modern even now. A Puma probably drives better but if its a bargain id go for it.
-
Other half was torn between having either a Puma or a Tigra back in '98 so I got her one of each to try over a weekend (my job back then meant I could get my hands on all sorts of motors for 'fleet evaluation' ;)) and the Ford drove lovely, crisper turn-in and less understeer, and was better screwed together. That's a bit unfair on the Tigra though as it was actually quite nice in its own way, just felt less eager, which is hardly a heinous sin.
The ones I have seen round here tend to have rotten back arches, flat paint and scabby alloys but that's just me only remembering seeing abused ones (you should see the S-Class Merc near my place, 4 years old and thoroughly buggered :o ). If it's a decent price I'd say take it, ask when the cambelt was done and as winter is on the way do a decent service and go round it thoroughly. They don't have any huge problems (well, rust can be an issue) and simple enough to work on.
-
avoid the 1.4 dude!!!!! awfull bloody engine but 1.6 much better, check sills too!! :o
-
Given the choice of a Tigra for peanuts or a Puma for peanuts, I'm sure the Puma could well be considered the better buy..but, as star_whites doesn't have the luxury of choosing between them, I'm with bluey, Dan_282, Marks DTM...I'd say yeah, why not?
Spares are available all over the place, as it's based on the Corsa. It's basically a Corsa GSi in a dress (not exactly a bad thing, surely?) with slightly less weight over the front axle, as I recall, thus improving handling a tadge. It's a bit of fun, with a VERY common engine(Vauxhall must have made more 1.6 ECOtecs than any other 90s engine) so servicing should be a doddle. Back arches get grotty (name a Vauxhall that doesn't) a lot have been thrashed/poorly maintained. 1.6s got ABS/discs all-round, which was still a nice novelty mid-90s. Have fun, I say! 8-)

And it's a Vauxhall for all those Trade Club servicing bits. :y :y :y
-
Very true!!!
Must try and ration the amount of exclamation marks I use.
!!!!!!
-
Well it's only costing 400 with not and tax so worth it just for the he'll if it!.....now parked on the drive awaiting a proper inspection at the weekend!
-
Well there you go starwhites. What car can you buy for 400 quids these days?? And just how bad can it be as a car for you to honestly say 'oh, i was ripped off paying 400 for this!"
Incidentally 2 tigras in my local scrappy, any bits, let me know. :y
-
tigras are making a bit of a comeback round here, many modders fit the c20let motor nowdays, theres a smart silver tigra down by us with an irmscher kit, looks cool.and the 1.6 motor aint bad either so go for it, look for a crack in the exhaust manifold though cus they crack and are very hard to get 2nd hand costing a small fortune new ::) :o
-
400 notes? Blimey, bit of a no-brainer then squire. Have fun with it! :)

-
Im lucky on that score as my brother works at a local scrappie so I get the heads up on anything that comes in to him that will be any use.
Well its all sorted now and shes more than happy, except the fact im going to nick it for a couple of weeks to enable me to get all the jobs done on the old girl at leisure instead of rushing everything ;D Looks like two weeks of go carting lol
-
enjoy!!! :y
-
haha. Good stuff. Careful on that one, she may decide to borrow you omega one day in repayment!!
-
mmmm!!! :o :o :o now thats a worry lol, i`d be rather concerned if my missus used mine :-? ;D
-
I'd be even more surprised if my missus used mine.
Thing is, I don't HAVE missus. I'd be saying "Who the hell are you, get out of my car!!" :y

Well, there was the girl that works in Sainsburys, so we..... anyway, moving swiftly on!! :y :y
-
I would actualy consider a Tigra 1.6 16V as a bit of a go cart.
They handle pretty well but its not pricey to make them significantly better.
-
You just need to be a bit of a contortionist to put the seat belt on ;) ;D
-
I always thought the dash was ok, it wasnt pretending to be a big car, it has the look of a simple, basic funtion-over form kind-of-look.
Some deceptively brave styling on the exterior, too. It doesnt look like a 15-year old design
