:-? I`m confused.....
I`ve read many times on OOF, that TD`s cannot be run on DERV/Veggie 'mixes'....this interesting (specialist) diesel website appears to contradict this; even specifically mentioning the Omega-6L/BMW-6L Bosch VP37 or VE diesel pumps as veg-suitable :-/
.....perhaps I have misunderstood something? :-[

Im sure most the reports ive heard are about the pipework specifically more than the pump, but not paid the greatest attention not having a diesel

Through inforation I have tracked down, it would appear that Bio-Diesel is fine, Straight Vegetable oil is dodgy, more specifically the damage to the rings due to the laquer build up caused by the oil... The oil is also much thicker than Diesel, which can cause issues in the fuel lines.
-
Please don't quote me, but I have been told (and not by the opinionated bloke in the corner of the pub, by an engineer in the industry) that 20% veg oil 80% normal diesel is generally fine.
Though I'm sure that doesnt apply to modern DTI engines, they are known to be more susceptible to damage from 'iffy fuel'. The 'primitive' BMW diesel is of the generation where in theory you can put any old rubbish in them. Modern DTI engines with their more exacting standards, finer direct injectors reallly dont like anything but 'proper' diesel, or biodiesel.

Most forecourts have 7% bio in the diesel only shell and bp have 100% derv and 7% pumps and guess what the 100% derv costs an extra 5p a litre >:(.
There's a chap that comes into my work who put a 50-50 mix in his range rover (p38) and it buggered his pump and valves big time.

I'm runing mine on 50/50 atm, but i've not been doing it long enough yet to know if something will break. The biggest risk as I understand is that the rings will gum allowing veg oil past and into the crank case eventually doing nasty things with the oil (the two will not mix) you could end up with move veg oil than lube oil and in a worst case scenario when you go to turn off the motor it will continue to run... to destruction I wouldn't wonder. I will be keeping an eye on my oil with regular changes.
My next step.. due to cold snap is to change to 90% veg to 10% Unleaded.
I'm lucky I have a spare engine and fuel pumps if it all goes wrong, but as far as i can tell I should be ok.

exactly. I wouldnt like to risk the likes of 50/50, no more than 20/80, and less than that, really.

As said before i know 3 omega TD that run just on veg oil and after 4years no probs at all
BUT, all 3 of them do it properly i,e, prepare the veg oil at hoe with seperators etc, and 2 of them have fuel heaters fitted from a peugot 405 which have them as standard :y

I've not got round to the whole used veg oil thing, I just look for new veg oil at decent prices. Emptied tesco at 83p/l, it's a dam sight cheaper than 120+ round here for regular diesel.
As I said though, it's not for everyone and as with everything it has it's risks... but then again so does boiling an egg :o

Debs, I have run 3 cars on home made mix derv + rapeseed oil. I had no problems other than with a Citroen Xantia TD where the fuel pump seals went - this may or may not have been related as I drove the car into the ground. As far as I am aware Bosch pumps are AOK. Lucas can be problematic.
I ran 80% veg in hot weather and around 10-20% in cold. The thinner the oil the better, hence the rapeseed.
I've recently done the sums again and the price of rapeseed oil round here is too high for it to be worth it, I also don't do the miles anymore so there would be little point. Other than that I wouldn't hesitate to give my tractor a go on it but I would probably keep the ratio to 30-40% veg max due to Omegas liking for sooting its pipes up.

All tractors have Bosch pumps the R515 :y

I see you have a new one :)
Remember folks Diesel himself made a demonstration engine run on Peanut Oil in 1900.

It`s a coolant-heated filter head; mounted on the engine bulkhead (mounted above and behind the engine).
I bought a Peugeot one (for my Disco) from the breaker`s yard for £5. :y
