Title: Tyres Follow on
Post by: mantahatch on 26 November 2010, 13:37:40
Following on from another thread, and not wishing to hijack there thread.
What is a resonable tyre to buy. I am in need of 4 tyres so cost is quite important. These people have been recommended to me http://www.etyres.co.uk/car-tyres-uk/searchresultsnew?tyreWidthId=8&tyreProfileId=6&tyreWheelId=4&tyreLoadRating=0&tyreSpeedId=0&orderBy=price&asc=1&newmenu=YES&showmenu=YES&tyre4X4=F

I must say Chris that usually I like to have Avons, but due to a great price I selected this time to have these Pirelli's.  So far I have found them very good, giving me great handling, although I must admit suddenly I can so easily spin the rear wheels well when accelerating from a junction without trying!! ::) ::) ::) :D :D ;)

I've got 235 x 45 x 17  Kumho Ectsa SPT's on mine and can't fault them.
Replaced Bridgestone's albeit 16" and are every bit as good regards , dry, wet and roadnoise performance .
I got mine from Camskil

You're right , they don't seem to do that size in Kumho'
I've just checked and it's actually Excsta  SPT's I've got which may be an older model as they are over a year old now.
Irrespective of which tyre you go for I can thoroughly recommend Camskil . I've purchased three sets of tyres from them and about to order a fourth for our Freelander, 48 hours to Ireland from order each time .

Pink ones... ?:-X.   ;)

Which of course will be absolutely fine when new, as my Falkens where. But, will degrade into something very difficult to keep straight as they wear, going by reports.

Just had 2 more KU31s fitted. £85 ish a corner from Blackcircles IIRC.

Good value for money IMHO. A pretty grippy tyre with a wear rate commensurate with that. If you're not as worried about performance you might get a harder wearing tyre for the money, I suppose. I think they take some beating.

As said before my favourite tyres are in this order

1. Continental Sport Contact 3
2. Dunlop SP Sport
3. Avon ZZ3

But all I keep hearing is how good Kuhmos are so maybe I may give them a bash on something.

Just read a tyre test where a Dunlop, not sure which, came 2nd in class in a noise test  :o, and thought yours where quieter than my sc3's.... which by the way, won over all by some distance  :P

The problem with online consumer reveiws is that everyone will say how their particular tyre there have just bought is the worlds best.  Be that Lin-long, Falken 912, SP9000 or Michelin PS2.

I had Kuhmo KU31 on goldie, thought they were rubbish - admittedly, I was trapsing around Snowdonia in March for the majority of the miles I did in that car.  On damp roads, there was nothing good to say. Good in the dry though.

In 7yrs and 5 Omegas, despite what I've tried, or had on when I bought it, I always went back to the £100ish SP9000, and was always delighted with them.  They have their faults - noise, and tramline when worn, but if they were still available, I would reshoe both Omegas today.

Yet I won't but anything other than P6000s on the Rover, despite flirting with several other tyres in the past 10yrs (P6000s aren't available either).  But P6000s are awful on the Omega.

Test was in a magazine, waiting in barbers. Auto car or whatever, didn't read the cover tbh.

All scientific with sound meters and brake test equipment in wet and dry. Real proper test at a test facility.

None of this "my tyre is better than your tyre, simply because it's the one I own" and "these new tyres are so much better than the the last(completely worn out) set, therefor they must be good tyres" nonsense.  :y

Hmmm, there is no way SP9000s are quieter than SC3s on an Omega. No way.  I quite like the SC3s, but preferred the previous SC2s to be honest. Though not as much as I like the SP9000s, obviously ;D

Well I also like the SP9000's (9090's I think they became) but they can be a little noisy, however the V6 has SP Sport Maxx on it now and I think they are even noisier, fantastic grip though!

The DTi has just had Kumho KU31's on the back and first impressions are good, when i've done the wishbones etc i'll get the same on the front and see how they go, they certainly seem to have a lot of good reports from varied sources.

An outfit down here called Tyreweb ;)

Usual price is around £126 each, but I know the manager well and he did me a good deal of £400 for the four, all in including computer wheel balance and valves of course 8-) 8-)  In his words his says he will "always look after me", and he does! :D :D :y :y

To tell you the truth he even fitted the two spare front bake pads I had and adjusted the handbrake system complete for FREE, which saved me a job in the cold weather for once  :-* :-*  :D :D

The 9090s where a one made for a manufacturer (Nissan?) and was a 9000 but with something done so it didn't need the sheen scubbed off it I believe?

I used to use sport Maxx. They were quite noisy, IMHO. Couldn't really fault the driving experience except that you don't want them on the front once they're more than half worn. Tramlining when part worn is quite bad.

They were a good value tyre, IMHO, when they were £90 but at £116 (special offer at blackcircles at the moment) they are a bit steep when you can get a KU31 for £85 and a SportContact 3 for £118.

Kevin sums it up really. I find they have plenty of grip in all conditions but the road noise is a bit intrusive, they haven't worn down enough to comment on the tramlining yet.

The DTi previously had Toyo T1R's on it which gave good grip even down to the 2mm that I changed them at, I'd certainly consider using them again, though the current price of KU31's means that if they perform as well as people say i'll probably be sticking to them in the future.

What didn't you like about SC3s?

SC3s are much quieter. Wear and grip about the same IIRC. I would say the main difference is that Sport Maxxs gave a bit more feedback. SC3s perhaps a lighter "understeery" feel to the steering and the KU31 a little more so?

Maybe this is why you were less keen on them? All 3 have the same level of grip wet and dry from what I can tell, but with the Dunlops you know where you are, with the SC3 and the KU31 you need increasing levels of confidence that it isn't going to let go. That's the main difference I can glean from them.

If noise isn't a big issue, and given that you are less keen on the SC3's, price being pretty much the same, I would try the Sport Maxx.

I thought the SC3s were more slippery than SC2s, which in turn didn't seem to stick as well as the SP9000s.  The SC3s did used to give noticibly worse understeer (though was at a time when the MV6 was understeery anyway), yet didn't take much to get the back end out when wet.

Maybe you're right, maybe it is the feedback affecting confidence - I seem to be able to easily find the limit currently, and the car gives me the confidence to do so, not just in cornering, but also in deceleration (acceleration is a different kettle of fish with an auto)...

...oh decisions, decisions...

I've got a bit of time on my side, as they have a bit of life in them.  Maybe try some KU31s on the Elite that doesn't get driven as hard.  Actually, it doesn't really get driven...

I previously had Continentals on mine, but since fitted Avon ZZ3's as they were cheaper than the Continentals and had good reviews. I have been impressed with their wet weather grip and they give plenty of warning when you are approaching their limits. :o :o :o

No experience of P9000's so I can't comment on these, used Dunlop SP's on a Volvo 960, they were a good all round tyre and good value for money, but wet weather grip not as good as the Avons or Continentals.

Never used Kumho KU31's so can't comment.

Tyres are a grudge purchase, but I have always had the attitude that tyres are cheap compared with the cost of the fuel it takes to wear them out and however good your brakes, suspension, steering are they all rely on that little patch of rubber in contact with the road.

To me wet weather performance is most important as that is when you are most likely to find a tyre wanting.  :o :o :o

Last few times I've bought tyres I got the cheapest deal I could find on the Internet where they an alliance with a local fitting centre. This has always been cheaper than phoning around and has worked well.  :)

Trouble is, their limits are pretty poor ;D.  Fortunately, they only lasted 4k before I had shredded them  :-[
