Hi i am building a redtop corsa rwd and have been told mv6 gearbox is same fitting can anyone tell me if this is correct believe its a r25-r28 box?

hmm my mate built a turbo redtop and pretty sure he used the omega 2 litre r25 box, that held up with 300bhp going through it
not sure if the v6 box will bolt up?hence he used the 2 litre box?

I think I read somewhere that all the GM family II (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/GM_Family_II_engine) engines have the same bolt patterns :-/
The diameter of the input shaft bush will probably change as the gearbox gets heavier and the clutch splines and release mechanisms are probably different too. Good luck :y

Sorry to hijack the thread but would this be the same with the 2.2? meaning that I could bolt a v6 into a 2.2 omega?

Yep as the 2.2 is just a stroked 2.0

Ford type 9 is another option, if one is needed.
Popular in kit cars so bellhousings to mate it to a C20XE are commonplace.
It won't take as much power as the R25/28 but you'll find a much more extensive range of gearkits for it should you want better ratios.

in general there are two types of box that you're looking at here, both are Getrag 240.
the R25 is a standard box, more often than not fitted with the small output "donut".
the R28 is a stronger version of the same, usually with the larger output "donut". The extra strength comes, I think, from shot-peened gears.
either will be ok for your application - it's vehicle weight and traction that kills gearboxes.

thanks does that mean the r28 will fit straight on with the shaft etc and no mods as i have sourced a box?

make sure the spigot bearing is installed in the end of the crank, and whatever flywheel combination you're using has the same height as the gearbox is expecting.
you must, however, use an R28 from Omega and NOT from Carlton / Senator.

You can use the flywheel and clucth setup from the original engine, an alternative is one from a front wheel drive Vx V6 of the mid 90's

hi have just got all the bits together and tried assembling, the r28 clutch plate is 9.5" where the redtop is 9" and the splines are different r28 has bigger and less splines. any suggestions? on a lighter note the spigot bearing fits [smiley=2vrolijk_08.gif]

I can suggest a clutch plate tomorrow morning for you.
is the clutch release bearing the right height ?

hi the pressure plate and basket on the new r28 clutch are the same fitting etc so i presume the release bearing will still work, not sure what you mean by right height? in theory if i could graft the splines from the r28 plate to redtop plate it would be fine, but after reading various forums and advice was told it would be a simple bolt on job

I suspect you may need the 2.5V6 clutch setup which from memory is smaller.
Check the Borg and Beck or similar clucth sites (e.g. LUK) for info

when I said "and whatever flywheel combination you're using has the same height as the gearbox is expecting", that's what i was on about.
most of the Omegas used dual-mass flywheels, which are thicker than the single-mass one that you have. This means that the end face of the clutch cover, the part that the release bearing mates to is further away from the rear face of the cylinder block. This is the "clutch height".
There are a number of options for you......
use a flywheel from a 2-litre Omega, complete with the clutch - if lucky, you'll get one without DMF
Use the flywheel that you have and change to a compatible driven plate.
get a special flywheel
Use a flywheel from a Carlton, and convert to cable clutch - again from the same vehicle.
regarding driven plates, you say that you have 9", which is 228mm. According to ZF, the plate that you have on the red-top is 228mm and 24teeth (sprung centre), whilst the plate you got with the gearbox is 240mm and 14 teeth (solid centre).
The Cavalier turbo 4x4 / Calibra turbo 4/4 have a friction disc of the correct diameter and correct hub splines with springs. Other than that, the Carlton 2.0 is a tad smaller, but acceptable in the hub department. I can't think of any reason why either shouldn't fit, but I'd certainly advice getting a second-hand one to trial-fit before you spend any appreciable money.

many thanks for all advice i am going back to calder clutch where i got r28 from they make them there and may be able to advise or splice the 2 if not will look into 4x4 plates

this seems to be the solution as i have been to calder clutch and they made me one up for £40 clutch part no 1907 for anyone else in the future, but not finished yet i need to find a 20mm spacer to compensate for losing the dual mass flywheel unless anyone knows a solution have had one idea sent to weld on a transit di bearing but problem is omega one is a plastic case ::)
