I have a 2000 facelift CDX 2.5td with the manual box.
I drove down to my local diesel tuning company who is regarded as being pretty good around here. He told me my car is 130 standard that are restricted by Vauxhall though the BMW with the identicle engine has 153 standard. He said these have been done before and go to nearly 170 if he takes the original brain out and reprogrammes it.
He then said that because mine has done 140k, he wouldn't advise a full map like he has done before, but rather try for an extra "20ish" horse power so the tolerences aren't as hard on the engine.
Has anyone chipped this engine before? Or chipped the 2.2dti? I'd appreciate any advise guys & gals.

chips are available through here to bring the engine back up to and beyond the bmw specs,
been around for 5 years, best bet is to pm the boy as he has my original contact for the chip :y you may need to put chip
socket into the ecu

Thanks mate! So do you recon it would bo ok/safe enough to get it chipped even with it being an older engine and the higher miles?
-
I don't think it's the engine you need to worry about, but rather if it's an automatic, the gearbox..

Mines just coming up to 151000 miles and i've got the full fat chip. So long as you keep your oil changes regular (I do mine ever 3000 miles) you should be ok and you will notice a massive difference in BHP and torque, mine will spin the wheels in 3rd if the road is damp ::)
-
It's not the automatic, it's the manual I have in my car. I'm led to believe that the manual is quite rare in the 2.5td, I'm not sure if that's true or not.

I think it is - but that's good, gearbox will be fine, then :) The only thing it might do, IMHO, is prematurely age the clutch.. but at least that is (essentially) a consumable rather than a gearbox ;)

So you'd recommend it then mate? :) Doesn't yours smoke when you floor the throttle? Is it the td or dti lump you have?

Its the 2.5 manual same as yours and it does smoke but if you get the No7 chip from TheBoys supplier its much better ;)
-
Ideal! Is it an expensive chip? I was quoted £220 from the guy at PowerTune. That was for the less agressive map, boasting about 20bhp more than standard.
-
Something like £70 from TBs man, I seem to recall? Never did get around to buying one before I chopped the TD in, though, so don't quote me on that ;D
-
Yeah, around the £70 mark but you will need the number of your ECU ;)
-
I run mine with a full fat chip too (approx 170bhp)... The only thing I get with mine is lumpyness at around 1500 rpm in first and second....
-
Only £70 :o I was quoted over £200!! Is it just one of those plug & play kits you guys are talking about? I hear they are no good in the long run.
-
No it's not a plug & play 'tuning box' - it's a replacement EEPROM that fits inside your ECU, exactly the same as any proper tuning shop would have to fit.. so to fit it you do need to open your ECU (and if it isn't already socketed, be handy with a soldering iron or know someone who is)
-
You might need to unsolder your existing chip and solder a carrier in its place but the chips that TBs contact supplies are tried and tested and not the crap you get off Ebay ;)
-
Well £70 sounds a good deal better than £220. I'm not exactly handy when it comes to things like that so I'd probably need to find someone to do it if I bought one. Would an auto electrician be my best bet?
-
A computer repair shop or even tv repairs might be able to help but open up your ECU first it might just the chip might just be a push fit, many are ;)
-
Ok, I'll have a look at it tonight if this heavy snow stops. I'm sure it's fairly easy to get into the ECU because I watched the chap from PowerTune do it in seconds.
Do you have the contact details of the person who does the chips your talking about?

Send TheBoy a PM and he'll put you in touch and/or supply via him (I don't actually know how it works.. I just know TB is the one with the contact :))
-
There's a how to here

and send TheBoy a PM but you'll need the last 3 numbers off your ECU ;)

Thanks a lot guys! I appreciate the help, really I do. :y

Go for it, mine is a 427 chip, a manual car that has done 207k. Smokes enough on Supermarket fuel (not so bad on decent fuel) and has a bit of a judder around 1500rpm.
Otherwise fuel consumption is up by at least 15% and I can overtake with a bit more confidence!

Mine doesn't feel as if it has much grunt until I'm way above 1500rpm anyway! :(

I own The Boys old 2.5TD Elite and even though its an auto I can confirm its pretty quick and doesnt smoke at all.

Still, life progresses, here's hoping I can bond with this bloody 03 Elite sat on the driveway :-/
