agreed.. all others are temporary solutions.. been there  done that..

chains are stronger, but damage the car on the long term and not practical.. rubber chains are a bit better but still weak and not practical also.. november winter tires on, march off..simples..

As Cem says by far the best solution is to fit winter tyres - but if you haven't got upwards of £500 to spare for new winter tyres/wheels then the low cost solution is to put something heavy in the boot, reduce tyre pressure (I run at 25psi) and put either socks or chains on in extreme conditions (i.e. when rear wheels keep spinning) to get you going.

Socks will self-destruct pretty quickly if driven for long on tarmac - chains won't, and will last longer, altho they shouldn't be used on tarmac.

Never used socks so don't know if there easy to get on & off, but chains are fiddly to get on (especially with freezing hands) and even more fiddly to get off.

So I would go for chains, reduce tyre pressure and put something heavy in the boot. :y

My omega is by far the worst car ive driven in the snow.

All over the place and gets stuck on any sort of hill that isn't a main road.

Will reducing the tyre pressure help?

I need to do something with mine, just ended up dragging it down a metal fence after the back end let go on a slow bend! Bumper, headlight trim, wing, oh, and erm, winter tyres now then!  :'( :-[ :( >:(

Probably, with weight in the back, but you wont get up that hill without socks/chains.

A bottle of single malt will shift your pain - probably to the top of your head by the morning.  ;D

My Omega's quite good in the snow & even without any weight in the boot or letting any pressure out of the tyres :)

I agree Pete. Think the Omega is very good in the snow, if you treat it gently ;) Not had any real problems at all, although we've not really had much yet this winter

i never had any problems with the omega even in 15cm of snow. i own a 2,2 dti so no tc or esp. filled up the tank, put on continental wintercontact on all 4 wheels and 3 slabs of concrete in the trunk. if you don't press the pedal to the floor you won't have any problems. i never even started in second gear, always in first, but gentle on the clutch

You surely jest sir!  :o  In all my years of driving, my current MV6 estate and my previous 2.6 CDX estate, are, without question, the worst handling cars in the snow I have ever experienced. I have fitted some Winter tyres recently in an attempt to address things a little, but still not had chance to test in proper snow.

While not the best the omega is far from the worst, and if you drive it like has been suggested you can get most places.

The XF was horrendous on the compacted snow in germany but fantastic in the slush.  Have a look for Tunnie's thread about his colleague's bmw 330.

Also while driving around I have even overtaken many cars in town who were crawling along, including one prick who decided he was going to try and not be embarrased by a rear wheel drive automatic.  Despite his best efforts to make me crash the miggy handled beautifully plusa little blast of the gas with the TC off made sure he was given a good spray off slush  ;D

The Omega is a Range Rover compared to BMW 330....

It's the best (reasonably modern) 2WD car I have driven in snow by far ;) ;)

Drop the tyre pressures to about 28psi (as long as you're not going to be doing any sustained high speed driving on clear roads), weight in the boot (at least 80-100Kgs) and treat the controls like your testicles are underneath them ;) ;) :y :y
