Title: Auto Gearbox Warning
Post by: Squealey on 19 December 2010, 11:58:49
Went out to collect my daughter last night and even though we havent got snow up here it is still bitterly cold. Stuck the auto (AR35) gearbox in first so it would warm up a bit quicker and went along at approx 30-35 at 3500 revs. After about a minute of this I had a warning on the dash saying 'Automatic Gearbox'. I dropped it into drive and carried on as usual.

From then on pulling away at junctions it was like it was in snow mode (which it wasnt). Got to my daughter, switched the engine off and back on again and all was well again.

Cars absolutlely fine now, just wondering why it does this? Is it some sort of safe mode if the gearbox temperature gets too hot? (and no I wont be trying to replicate it any time in the future)

Effectively is was in snow mode. The fault warning had put the gearbox into 3rd, which is what snow mode does.  ;)
Can't help with your fault though.  ::)

It should cope with those conditions so there's something amiss, but why select first ? Never felt the need personally.

Anyway, if the ATF has been serviced within the last 50 to 60 k then I'd be looking to get it on tech 2 asap. Which might be awkward given your location.  :-/

In practice that's what the gearbox does for itself anyway ie when cold hang on to first for a bit longer than usual, it's to help get the cats up to temp sooner .... so they say.  :y

Yep, and get the internals up to temperature quicker too.  Been a standard feature on many auto's for a good few years now, so there's no need to do it yourself.

The ATF was replaced when the AR35 went on (around 120k).

Given how hard the tractors work the ATF, esp chipped ones, I'd probably change it at least every 50k.

However, in this case, I am not immediately suspicious of the box.  If you have a repeat, get a reader on the gearbox ecu :y
