just watched top gear boxing day middle east  :o :o

 ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

some facts:

* driving through iraq (except the kurdish area) was definitely a mad idea.. they could easily be shot and using those sports cars , they were attracting  all attention more than anything.. if they were not lucky it could be their last programme :o :o :o

* Turkish border make checks for drug dealers (as they use that route) and police wont be friendly anyway.. I have used that border pass in the past and definitely most bad area.. (stayed 3 months for some oil trade job between my bank and a fuel company)

* after that the road that follow is parallel to the border so one side is covered with mines (but  there are wires seperating the area) but in that area trucks are much more dangerous as their drivers mostly dont sleep well (oil trade) as they continously travel

* but why didnt they use iskenderun harbor and pass from there easly from better roads..

* and no comment for using those sporty cars in desert ;D ;D :-X

* east part of Turkey where terror is usuall not so dangerous for westerners.. as kurds expect some help from them.. so they are wrongly informed.. ;D

Top Gear is abysmal.
That drive-by shooting episode, presumably meant to have us all rolling around in stitches at just how 'out there' these three lame middle-aged men are, was jaw-droppingly irresponsible and so cringe-worthy I was squirming on the sofa wishing it would stop.

The only drive-by shooting i'd like to witness is any one with that utter knob Clarkson in the firing-line, using real bullets.

Oh my, you've got me started on Top Gear now... [smiley=rolleyes.gif]

EVERY time they "test" some meaningful, real-world car, especially older, used cars (think 'Supercars for under £1500' episode, or 'BL did make some quite decent cars' episode, with SD1, Dolomite Sprint & Ambassador), the budget is so ridiculous it's no wonder the cars fail under harsh treatment. If they'd done 'Supercars for under £5000', or 'Good BL cars for under £2500', they'd have had a more realistic real-world test and no cheap laughs. They may even have had to use some real-world journalistic skills. Maybe that would be too difficult for them - just go for the rancid cheap laughs, that's much easier..... [smiley=thumbdown.gif]

I think you're forgetting that To Gear is an entertainment programme, loosely based around cars...  ...it hasn't been a serious review programme for years - its 3 middle aged men arsing around, and for that I like it.

I haven't forgotten that it's failed to "entertain" me in many years.
What's wrong with expecting more from the premier motoring programme on TV than 3 abject berks arseing about? WITH OUR BLOODY LICENCE FEE MONEY???

Don't we already suffer from more than enough 'lowest common-denominator' programmes of all tripes and stripes?

Its not a MOTORING programme!

They could fill the slots with cheap-to-make trailer trash TV - x-factor/big brother/jungle dweebs/come dancing dial-a-prat type shows. I, for one, think we have enough of those programmes.

Yes, and they're ALL on itv, except for gayenders and Deal or no Deal on 4. and Itv is the one channel I never watch unless it's champions league.

..I personnally didn't think the Iraq episode was their best - may be a bit tooooo much production that made it a bit toooo far fetched.
BUT - I recall the trip to the North Pole in the Toyota Pick Up's, the trip to the top of a mountain in a Disco', playing with a RR Sport on Salisbury Plain, several Bugatti Veyron episodes.. and many other memorable fantasy episodes by probably the luckiest blokes on the planet - and I forgive them.
Touchwood - I'll never ever need to drive in this area - let alone be on a plane that lands in it - so probably despite the huge crew that had to accompany them - thanks for the entertainment - I found it somewhat less uncomfortable to watch than Mr Walliams and the intensley annoying little twit that follows him around.. >:(

Looking forward to the rest of the TG series coming up... :y
Cheers

BBC can never cope for all tastes, but tonyyeb your in the minority. Top Gear is a hugely popular show, not just in the UK, but world wide. Its a cracking show I love them all, its the only thing I actually look forward to on TV.

By 'Premier' motor shows do you mean that shite that is 5th Gear? Its more interesting reading Nickbats posts  :P  ;D

What other shows are there? Oh yesss Used Car Roadshow!

As others have pointed out, its not a motoring show, its an entrainment program. Its interesting you say you sat there in pain watching it, TV's have this wonderful feature called a 'Remote' So why don't you switch channels are stop your moaning?

Couldn't have put it better myself.

Top Gear was the only BBC programme I actually bothered to set the system to record this Christmas.  But everyone is different - I mean if you listened to the viewing figures (which I think are heavily skewed), 10m chavs watch Knobenders regularly - that is 1 out of 6 man, woman and child in the UK.

The simplest analogy I can think of is Churchill being 'in the minority' in wishing to rearm in the thirties due to the re-armament in Germany, but surely you would not suggest he was wrong. If you accept that as valid, then I rest my case m'lud:-? :-? :-?

Incidentally, I accept that the programme is watched by many, but so was Big Brother.

I'm aware of the existence and function of the remote control, but thanks to all those above who've reminded me about it  [smiley=grin.gif]
I won't make a date to watch it, but will sit through it if its on, and though I don't advocate a return to the dryly factual days of William Woollard (remember him?), I do think the show veers uncomfortably from attempting to be the 'motorists champion' (remember the attacks on the Chief Constable of North Wales?) to "entertainment" and then on to puerile sterotype bashing - caravanners and caravans, any products of the failed British motor industry, the French, redneck Americans, American cars, gays, foreigners in general. I'm trying not to appear po-faced and humourless, because I'm anything but, but isn't the above all a bit tired and lame?
Wouldn't a fresh approach (and new presenters) be refreshing? Haven't the kiddies had their day?

Incidentally, as somebody mentioned MoTD above, I'd also like to put Lineker, Hansen and most especially Lawrenson in the way of that drive-by shooting that Clarkson is already lined up for.... [smiley=grin.gif]

As said, we are all different.  The motoring side of Top Gear, although based around cars, is not the key for me. Its the, as you put, purile comedy I enjoy.  I used to watch Men Behaving Badly whn it was first on, for similar reasons. Childish? Yup. Funny? Well, it appeals to my sense of 'fun'

I can't disagree with you on Match of the Day though ;D
