Was at my local tyre place today to get a couple of tyres. Known the fella for years and was chatting away, as you do.
He was saying that the major suppliers have ramped the wholesale price of winter tyres up through the roof and whats more, are restricting availability in order to justify the increased cost. Quite available in to home counties of England though as thats where the public are really screaming out for them, by all accounts.
A tyre that cost him less than £40 to buy in March is now over £90. He simply cannot get tyres for regular customers appears to be no more than blatant profiteering and not just the rise in cost of raw materials.... :-?.

Yeah I second that; I bought heating oil earlier this year for about 40p a litre, but now hearing reports of people being charged 70p a litre. Absolutely scandalous. >:( >:(
Also fitted some winter tyres to the car, sourced them myself through "Mytyres.com". Can't believe the difference they have made to the tramlining problem, it's now like a different car, must be down to the softer componds etc :) ;D

The best time to buy winter tyres is March / April.

That only works if 16's will physically fit over the brakes on the VXR8 ;)

imo its best to try on a tire-wheel selling shop.. not something that you can buy from net..

I have noticed this, I was planning on getting a set of Nokian's for the Omega before the weather hit. Alas work got in the way and I never had chance. However the tyres were ~£60-70 a corner, now the same tyre is £173 >:(
Both of these are from MyTyres. I wouldn't mind a bit of a markup, but that is disgusting!

I wonder if the tyre manufacturers had anything to do with it too.

problem is tire chemicals are expensive..and tire shelf is short.. all customers demand newly produced tires .. (no one accepts 1-2 year old tires) so tire manufacturers being experienced about sales numbers on every country , I estimate they were short on stock..
the summer tires (bridgestone potenza) I bought last time for omega was some months old and distributor (not the tire shop) had bad moments with me >:( he said what you expect, those tires are expensive not everyone buys them and those come from japan ,and the cargo takes long time with ship.. :-?
but of course this doesnt change the fact that when the snow falls , winter tires price goes up as usual but not that much as I witnessed in your country.. :o
